Location: Shaker High School and Shaker Middle School
Hourly Rate: $19.00, according to the part-time wage scale
Schedule: Per diem; hours and shifts vary based on district needs, including evenings, school events, and summer programs
Position Overview
The North Colonie Central School District is seeking dependable and professional individuals to serve as Per Diem Substitute Hall Monitors and Night Safety Monitors at Shaker High School and Shaker Middle School.
Substitute monitors help maintain a safe, secure, organized, and welcoming environment during the school day, after-school activities, evening programs, athletic events, summer programs, and community events. Successful candidates must work well with children and teenagers, follow administrative direction, and make the safety of students, staff, and visitors their highest priority.
Assignments are offered on an as-needed basis.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Maintain student, staff, and visitor safety as the primary focus of every assignment.
  • Build positive and respectful relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Follow assignments, instructions, safety procedures, and administrative direction.
  • Serve as a visible and approachable point of contact during school activities and after-hours events.
  • Welcome visitors, staff, students, and community members and direct them to the appropriate areas.
  • Monitor entrances, exits, hallways, and other assigned areas.
  • Verify that individuals entering the building are authorized to be on school property.
  • Assist with opening, securing, and closing doors according to district access procedures.
  • Help manage visitor flow, event access, student movement, and crowds during school and community programs.
  • Reinforce school expectations calmly, consistently, and respectfully.
  • Answer questions and communicate concerns to the appropriate administrator or staff member.
  • Respond calmly and promptly to emergencies and follow established district safety procedures.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, student concerns, or potential hazards.
  • Assist school departments with operational tasks during periods of downtime.
  • Support summer school, athletics, continuing education programs, and other district events as assigned.

Required Training
Training will be provided as appropriate for the assignment and may include:
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS)
  • Raptor Visitor Management System
  • New York State S.H.E.L.L. safety procedures
  • CPR, AED, First Aid, and Narcan
  • Greeter and Securely Pass systems
  • Chromebook and tablet-based visitor management tools

Collaboration and Communication
Per diem substitute monitors may work closely with:
  • Shaker High School and Shaker Middle School administrators
  • Continuing Education Program coordinators
  • Main office personnel
  • Teachers and student-support staff
  • Athletic and summer program staff
  • District department leaders
  • Community groups using district facilities

Substitute monitors are expected to communicate respectfully, accept feedback, and follow the direction of the administrator or designated staff member supervising the assignment.
Qualifications and Preferred Experience
  • Ability to work effectively and positively with children and teenagers
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive school environment
  • Ability to follow administrative direction and established district procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer-service skills
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies
  • Strong observation, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Careful attention to student behavior, building activity, and potential safety concerns
  • Comfort using computers, Chromebooks, tablets, and electronic visitor systems
  • Ability to adapt to changing assignments, schedules, and priorities
  • Prior experience in safety, security, school monitoring, customer service, childcare, education, or working with the public is preferred
  • Previous crisis-intervention training is preferred
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification is preferred
  • Familiarity with school environments and building operations is preferred
