Job description

Teaches by creating a collaboratively developed, flexible magnet program in an innovative teaching and learning environment favorable to learning and personal growth; by encouraging students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to obtain a good foundation for continuous growth and development by providing students with experiences which integrate the affective, cognitive and psychomotor dimensions of learning; by establishing effective rapport with students and their parents; by assisting students in developing positive feelings toward themselves and others; by ensuring that rigorous standards are learned through the magnet school's schoolwide approach; by implementing the magnet school's theme throughout the design and delivery of learning experiences; and by actively participating in the ongoing development of an innovative, collaborative, engaging culture of excellence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Actively participates in the development and implementation of the magnet school's program of instruction
  • Coordinates parent advisory activities and parent education workshops.
  • Plans and implements a program of study that integrates student voice and choice with State Department of Education Standards, school-wide theme objectives, and the APS Board of Education goals and objectives.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, assignments, units and projects in harmony with curriculum goals, communicates the content and theme objectives to students, and measures and analyzes ongoing progress in all objectives.
  • Selects and employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting magnet school objectives in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of appropriate student behavior and discipline to achieve a vibrant learning atmosphere in the classroom and assists in its maintenance campus wide to develop student self-control, focus, civility, internal motivation, positive social decision making, empathy, and the ability to adapt to changing social demands.
  • Evaluates and communicates the learning progress of students on a regular basis.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the District testing program.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents concerning students' academic, social and behavioral progress.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • With the school team, selects and requests appropriate books, digital resources, and instructional materials that align with the magnet school approach and theme, and maintains required inventory records.
  • Implements effective learning programs and initiates referrals to appropriate personnel when concerns arise.
  • Provides directions and materials for substitute teachers. Plans for and supervises classroom aides, guests and volunteers.
  • Collaborates with staff and support personnel in assessing and helping students with health, attitude, learning and behavioral problems.
  • Actively participates in professional development and collaboration to effectively implement the school's magnet school theme.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Effective communication skills, verbal, written, and digital.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision making, professional collaboration, innovative, personable, and problem solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person, on the telephone, and in digital communication.
  • Knowledge and application of APS community, computer system, financial procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others.
  • Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect.
  • Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting teachers and students.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Valid NM Teacher's license appropriate to teaching assignment.
  • 300 6-12 Secondary
  • 350 5-9 Middle-Level
  • 500 PreK-12 Specialty Area
  • With appropriate endorsement(s) in Social Studies.
