BUS DRIVER (ROUTE DRIVER)
 

Division / Department:  Operations Evaluation Instrument:       Classified Pay: Bus Driver Salary Schedule Pay Type: Salary, Non-Exempt Retirement: PSERS Contract Work Year: 180 (student school calendar days) Reports to: Transportation Supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of any GED Testing Program required. Candidates must be a minimum of 21 years of age, possess a valid Georgia CDL with PS endorsement, and must have a good driving record for a minimum of the past three years. Experience is preferred, but not mandatory. Must have a pre- employment and annual physical exam by a licensed doctor of the district's choice. No addiction to alcohol or narcotic drugs. Drivers must submit to random drug testing and mandatory post-accident drug testing. A criminal background check is required.

GOAL:

Transport students to and from assigned education centers or designation. Controls passenger's behavior and maintains safe operation of the assigned bus.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contacts dispatch as prescribed before and after route.
  • Communicates with the department and schools effectively.
  • Maintains a positive attitude toward the job, fellow workers, school staff, students, and parents.
  • Drives designated route according to stop schedule and transports students to and from school or trip designations.
  • Performs pre and post trip inspections of the bus as required. Returns paperwork and keys promptly.
  • Fuels the bus as needed for the next route.
  • Performs necessary average lifting up to 50 pounds and can assist in bus evacuations.
  • Submits all reports and time sheets in a timely manner.
  • Delivers bus to Fleet Mechanic as directed for scheduled maintenance.
  • Reports any damage on the interior or exterior to the Fleet Mechanic using appropriate documentation.
  • Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable and punctual manner.
  • Operates the bus without receiving a traffic violation or warning citation form state or local enforcement. Any such incidents are reported in a timely manner.
  • Operates the bus without any preventable accidents.
  • Maintains external and internal cleanliness of the bus as required for safe and comfortable operation.
  • Monitors/operates communication devices for essential and emergency transmissions only.
  • Conducts emergency drills as required.
  • Reports delays, accidents, and unusual situations to the Director of Facilities and Operations.
  • Maintains student discipline on the bus and refers serious infractions to the appropriate administrator using the Bus Referral Discipline Form.
  • Establishes, maintains, and utilizes seating assignments as prescribed.
  • Collects, maintains, and periodically updates emergency information and is aware of student's medical needs reported by the parent/guardian.
  • Presents a professional appearance.
  • Has the ability to drive any make or model of bus in the fleet.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and materials; adheres to the chain of command.
  • Follows federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Education Bus Drivers

  • Operates wheelchair lift and secures door on lift during transport.
  • Performs necessary tie downs for wheelchairs and seat security devices for students.
