What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a school based Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?

To thrive as a School-Based RBT, you need a solid understanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA), behavior intervention strategies, and must hold an RBT certification. Familiarity with data collection systems, behavior tracking software, and progress reporting tools is essential. Strong communication, patience, and collaboration skills are vital for working effectively with students, teachers, and support staff. These competencies ensure effective implementation of behavioral interventions and promote positive educational outcomes for students with behavioral challenges.

How does a school based RBT typically collaborate with teachers and other educational staff?

A School Based Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works closely with teachers, special education staff, and school psychologists to support students with behavioral or developmental needs. Collaboration often involves regular communication, participating in team meetings, and sharing observations to help develop and implement individualized behavior intervention plans. RBTs may also provide in-class support, assist in data collection, and offer strategies to teachers for managing challenging behaviors, ensuring a cohesive approach to student success.

What is a school based RBT?

School-based Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are trained professionals who work within educational settings to provide behavior therapy and support to students, particularly those with autism or other developmental disorders. They implement behavior intervention plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to help students develop social, academic, and life skills. RBTs work closely with teachers, school staff, and families to ensure consistent and effective interventions, fostering a positive learning environment for students.

Not Your Typical School Job. And That's Exactly Why People Love It.

If sitting behind the same desk every day sounds boring, keep reading.

Our School Consultation Team works alongside public school staff across South Jersey, helping students build the skills they need to be successful both inside and outside the classroom.

Every day is different. Every student is different. Every win matters.

We're looking for people who are confident, compassionate, adaptable, and excited by work that keeps them engaged.

What Your Day Might Look Like

You'll spend your school day working directly with one student, helping them:

  • Navigate classroom routines
  • Build communication and social skills
  • Develop emotional regulation strategies
  • Increase independence
  • Successfully participate in their education

Along the way you'll:

  • Implement individualized behavior plans
  • Collect behavior and skill acquisition data
  • Collaborate with teachers, Child Study Teams, families, and your supervising BCBA
  • Participate in ongoing training and supervision
  • Provide two after-school home or community ABA sessions each week

Where You'll Work

Although this position is posted under our Cherry Hill School Team, Cherry Hill is simply our home base for trainings, meetings, and administrative support.

Our staff provide services in public school districts throughout South Jersey.

Some team members enjoy staying with one school placement, while others appreciate the variety of supporting multiple districts throughout the year.

Reliable transportation and flexibility to travel approximately 35โ€“40 minutes from Cherry Hill are important parts of this role.

The Kind of Person Who Thrives Here

This isn't always an easy jobโ€”but it's an incredibly rewarding one.

Our students may need support with:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Aggression
  • Elopement
  • Classroom participation
  • Behavioral challenges

We're looking for someone who can remain calm, think on their feet, build trust, and show up consistently for students who rely on them every day.

The good news? You'll never be doing it alone.

Our School Consultation Team is collaborative, supportive, and always willing to jump in to help each other problem-solve.
