Scenario Designer information

What is a scenario designer?

Scenario Designers are professionals who create detailed and structured scenarios for various applications, such as games, simulations, training programs, or storytelling projects. They are responsible for developing the narrative, setting objectives, outlining possible events or outcomes, and ensuring the scenario aligns with the desired learning or entertainment goals. Scenario Designers often collaborate with subject matter experts, developers, and other creatives to ensure that the scenarios are engaging, realistic, and effective for their intended audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a scenario designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scenario Designer, you need strong skills in narrative development, game design principles, and creative writing, often supported by a degree in game design or related fields. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Unity, Unreal Engine, and scripting languages, as well as experience using branching narrative or scenario planning software, is typically required. Exceptional collaboration, adaptability, and communication skills are crucial for integrating feedback and working with multidisciplinary teams. These abilities ensure the design of engaging, coherent scenarios that enhance user experience and support project goals.

What are some common challenges scenario designers face when creating interactive experiences?

Scenario Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing narrative depth with user agency, ensuring scenarios are engaging yet achievable, and aligning with technical constraints of the platform or game engine. Collaboration with writers, developers, and artists is crucial to maintain a cohesive vision while adapting to feedback and project changes. Time management and prioritizing features based on project scope are also important skills, as Scenario Designers frequently juggle multiple scenarios or iterations simultaneously.

  • Coordinate EW storyline development within the broader scenario design effort and support dynamic scripting and adjustments during live exercises.
  • Advise the exercise design team on how EW events affect the training audience via the simulation and integrate real-world threats, intelligence, and lessons learned into the EW storyline.
  • Directly contribute to exercise planning documents, including Annex B and C, Appendix 12, and other HICOM and operations order sections, as required.
  • Train, monitor, and advise the commander on EW doctrine and tactics, and develop and propose draft of EW events for inclusion in the brief.
