Job description

GRE HERC Services, LLC (GHS) has openings for two full-time Utility Operators at its downtown Minneapolis facility. GHS operates the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), on behalf of Hennepin County. HERC provides the county with cost effective resource recovery in harmony with a sustainable environment. We help the county manage waste by burning garbage to create energy for the electric grid and steam for nearby buildings.

In the Utility Operator position, you help the team by facilitating the continuous movement and dispersal of trash within the facility. You operate a front-end loader to deliver waste to the designated section of the tipping floor, direct trucks on and off the tipping floor and inspect waste deliveries for unacceptable and hazardous waste. You also perform daily cleaning and loader preventative maintenance and checks along with various cleaning tasks on the tipping floor.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Operating a front-end loader safely and efficiently to deliver waste to the designated section of the tipping floor. Includes relieving the Ash House Loader Operator and Traffic Director, when needed.
  • Directing trucks on and off the tipping floor safely and efficiently to maintain a consistent flow.
  • Operating a street sweeper.
  • Observing and inspecting waste deliveries for waste that is unacceptable or hazardous.
  • Communicating effectively with haulers, Scale House attendant and Utility and Crane Operators.
  • Performing general housekeeping duties such as sweeping, cleaning up trash, shoveling ash, etc.
  • Exchanging necessary information with team members.

To qualify for this position you must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have previous experience with a front-end loader
  • Be able to work in a wide range of climatic conditions
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds and physically qualify for use of respirator equipment
  • Be familiar with good safety practices
  • Be able to work flexible shifts and overtime hours
  • Be able to work well with others and possess a strong work ethic
  • Complete a successful background check, drug/alcohol test and references
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

This position works rotating 4 X 4 – 12 hour shifts. Hours are: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM for 4 days, 4 days off, and then the next 4 day shift is from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. It is a union position with pay starting at $39.13 per hour. We offer medical, dental, vision, life, disability, paid time off, retirement plan, free on-site parking and more.
