Scada Programming information

What is SCADA programming?

SCADA programming involves creating and configuring software that monitors and controls industrial processes, such as manufacturing, energy, or water treatment systems. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems collect real-time data from sensors and equipment, display this information to operators, and allow them to control processes remotely. Programming these systems typically involves using specialized software platforms to design user interfaces, set up data communication protocols, and implement automation logic. SCADA programmers ensure the system operates efficiently, safely, and reliably, often integrating with PLCs and other industrial devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SCADA programmer?

To thrive as a SCADA Programmer, you need a solid background in industrial automation, control systems, and programming, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with SCADA software platforms (such as Wonderware, Ignition, or Siemens WinCC), PLC programming, and relevant industry certifications is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you work well with engineering teams and clients. These competencies ensure reliable system integration, efficient troubleshooting, and optimal plant or process performance.

What are some common challenges faced by SCADA programmers when integrating new devices into existing control systems?

SCADA programmers often encounter challenges when integrating new devices, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy hardware and software, managing communication protocols, and maintaining data integrity across the system. Troubleshooting connectivity issues and configuring drivers to facilitate smooth data exchange are also common tasks. Collaborating closely with engineers, IT specialists, and equipment vendors is essential to resolve these challenges efficiently and minimize system downtime.

Are SCADA programmers in demand?

SCADA programmers are in demand due to the increasing need for automation and control systems in industries such as manufacturing, energy, and utilities. Skilled professionals with knowledge of PLCs, HMI, and SCADA software like Wonderware or Ignition are sought after, especially those with certifications and experience in system integration and cybersecurity. Job opportunities are often available in regions with industrial infrastructure development and infrastructure modernization projects.

How to become a SCADA programmer?

To become a SCADA programmer, you typically need a background in electrical engineering, computer science, or automation technology, along with proficiency in programming languages such as ladder logic, Python, or C++. Familiarity with SCADA software platforms like Wonderware, Ignition, or GE iFIX is essential, and obtaining industry certifications can enhance job prospects. Practical experience through internships or hands-on projects is also valuable for developing the skills required in SCADA programming roles.

Intersect develops, constructs, and operates the most ambitious power and data center infrastructure in the country by co-locating industrial demand with dedicated gas and renewable power generation.

Intersect was acquired by Google in March 2026 and operates as an independent subsidiary. We are developing and constructing multiple gigawatts of energy and data center projects in the U.S., enabling more data center and generation capacity to come online faster. We’re on an aggressive growth trajectory and looking for people hungry to tackle the largest energy challenges on the planet.

Location & Team Gatherings

We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed location.

We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

About This Role

As a SCADA Engineer in the Control Room on Intersect's Operations team, you'll build and maintain the real-time operational control systems, telemetry pipelines, and SCADA infrastructure that power our utility-scale clean energy fleet. You'll ensure high availability across our solar PV, BESS, and substation assets while managing critical ISO dispatch interfaces, field hardware integration, and OT network security. Partnering closely with asset management, engineering, and field operations, you'll serve as a key technical defender of fleet uptime and operational excellence.

Team Overview

This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect's mission to accelerate the clean energy transition. The Operations team manages, monitors, and optimizes Intersect's growing fleet of utility-scale clean energy assets around the clock. Joining this team means driving operational resilience, shaping enterprise SCADA standards, and collaborating with top-tier technical talent dedicated to long-term reliability and performance.

What You'll DoDevelop and Maintain Enterprise SCADA Platforms
  • Design, build, and maintain enterprise Ignition SCADA HMIs, alarm modules, and control workflows for utility-scale solar PV and BESS facilities.
  • Integrate Canary Labs high-speed time-series historian for real-time archiving, performance trending, and operational analytics.
  • Ensure high system availability, rapid root-cause analysis, and participate in an on-call rotation for forced outages, grid trips, and critical telemetry loss.
Manage ISO Telemetry and Field Hardware Integration
  • Configure, maintain, and validate ICCP (TASE.2), DNP3, Modbus, MQTT (Sparkplug B), and IEC 61850 protocols for RTO/ISO dispatch across ERCOT, CAISO, and PJM.
  • Program, integrate, and troubleshoot SEL RTACs, PLCs, protection relays, and Power Plant Controllers (PPC) across utility assets.
  • Lead commissioning, factory acceptance testing, and point-to-point telemetry validation for new clean energy sites entering real-time operations.
Enforce OT Security and Regulatory Compliance
  • Maintain OT network segmentation according to the Purdue model across fleet control networks, utilizing Palo Alto and Fortinet firewalls.
  • Ensure strict alignment with NERC CIP compliance standards, access control policies, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Collaborate with internal IT/OT security teams and external vendors to perform system audits, security patching, and firmware updates.
Drive Operational Excellence and Fleet Standards
  • Develop standardized data mapping, HMI templates, and alarm management practices across all operational facilities.
  • Partner with Engineering, Asset Management, and field technicians to optimize control room visibility and real-time response times.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline.
  • 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in utility-scale clean energy (solar PV, BESS, or high-voltage substations) within a control room or SCADA engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise developing and maintaining Inductive Automation Ignition SCADA platforms and HMI interfaces.
  • Proven proficiency with industrial communications protocols and ISO telemetry including ICCP, DNP3, Modbus, MQTT (Sparkplug B), and IEC 61850 in ERCOT, CAISO, or PJM markets.
  • Direct experience programming and troubleshooting SEL RTACs, PLCs, protection relays, and Power Plant Controllers.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in an on-call rotation to respond to forced outages, grid trips, and critical telemetry loss.
  • Familiarity with Canary Labs historian integration, Purdue Model OT network segmentation, Palo Alto/Fortinet firewalls, and NERC CIP compliance requirements.
  • Strong technical composure and problem-solving mindset under high-stakes operational pressure.
