Scada Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SCADA Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SCADA Programmer, you need a solid background in industrial automation, control systems, and programming, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with SCADA software platforms (such as Wonderware, Ignition, or Siemens WinCC), PLC programming, and relevant industry certifications is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you work well with engineering teams and clients. These competencies ensure reliable system integration, efficient troubleshooting, and optimal plant or process performance.

What is the salary of PLC SCADA programmer?

The salary of a PLC SCADA programmer typically ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with certifications and specialized skills can earn higher wages. Salaries also vary based on the complexity of projects and the employer's size.

Are SCADA engineers in demand?

SCADA engineers are in high demand due to the critical role they play in industrial automation, energy management, and infrastructure systems. Employers seek professionals skilled in PLC programming, HMI development, and cybersecurity to maintain and improve control systems across various industries.

What is SCADA programming?

SCADA programming involves creating and configuring software that monitors and controls industrial processes, such as manufacturing, energy, or water treatment systems. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems collect real-time data from sensors and equipment, display this information to operators, and allow them to control processes remotely. Programming these systems typically involves using specialized software platforms to design user interfaces, set up data communication protocols, and implement automation logic. SCADA programmers ensure the system operates efficiently, safely, and reliably, often integrating with PLCs and other industrial devices.

What are some common challenges faced by SCADA programmers when integrating new devices into existing control systems?

SCADA programmers often encounter challenges when integrating new devices, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy hardware and software, managing communication protocols, and maintaining data integrity across the system. Troubleshooting connectivity issues and configuring drivers to facilitate smooth data exchange are also common tasks. Collaborating closely with engineers, IT specialists, and equipment vendors is essential to resolve these challenges efficiently and minimize system downtime.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, or certain senior roles in technology companies can earn $500,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and extensive industry experience, and may include bonuses or stock options that significantly increase total compensation.

Job description

Description:

We are ERock!

ERock is a leader and innovator in distributed energy. ERock has responded to long-term trends in electricity by becoming the first smart-grid supplier to US energy consumers. The company installs, operates, and integrates its highly flexible, low-cost, and quick-response distributed generation to increase reliability and stability, reduce costs and decrease carbon footprint.

At ERock, our backup generators ensure that customers will never be without power, allowing their business to operate normally when there is an outage in the area. Our innovative approach provides customers with highly reliable, ultra-clean backup generation at a fraction of the cost of traditional backup solutions. We seek those who share our commitment to customer service, innovation, and ingenuity.

Role Overview:

The Senior SCADA Engineer will lead the design, implementation, integration, and administration of our VTSCADA and real-time operational systems supporting distributed energy assets. This role combines engineering depth, system ownership, and team leadership, with responsibility for designing scalable SCADA architecture that enables rapid fleet growth while proactively improving system reliability to reduce downtime and operational risk. You will serve as the technical authority across SCADA architecture, integrations, grid support telemetry, and real-time operations systems.

Key Responsibilities:

SCADA Architecture & System Ownership

  • Own and evolve SCADA architecture supporting ERock’s distributed generation and microgrid fleet
  • Develop and maintain SCADA systems, partnering with cross-functional teams to enhance data flow, system performance, and operational visibility
  • Provide technical design oversight, set priorities, and serve as escalation authority
  • Serve as technical authority for Autosol ACM and related real-time systems
  • Establish enterprise standards for telemetry, tag structure, alarm management, and data integrity
  • Provide support for our 24x7 Microgrid Control Center
  • Design scalable solutions enabling rapid site onboarding and fleet growth
  • Ensure compliance with cybersecurity protocols and company SCADA standards.

Grid & Utility Integrations

  • Lead ICCP configuration and utility data exchange with ERCOT and other market participants
  • Architect telemetry models supporting ERCOT compliance and grid participation
  • Ensure secure, reliable data flow across field devices, SCADA platforms, and external entities

Real-Time SCADA Operations & Deployment

  • Oversee engineering and commissioning of new site integrations
  • Maintain performance, resilience, and uptime of real-time operational SCADA systems
  • Provide technical review of site SCADA drawings; architect monitoring and control schemes; establish tag/point standards; and oversee configuration and programming of SCADA, including HMIs, historians, and controllers.
  • Support upgrades, migrations, and technology enhancements
  • Partner with IT and Operations to ensure secure, hardened infrastructure and operational readiness during grid events

Systems Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive automation, tooling, and database enhancements to improve scalability and visibility
  • Strengthening change management and deployment governance across the SCADA environment
  • Ensure all changes to the SCADA system are governed by a change management process
Requirements:

Basic (Required) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • 7+ years of SCADA (VTSCADA, Siemens, Emerson or similar) engineering experience within energy, gas or electric utility environments
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience supporting real-time operational systems
  • Experience designing and implementing ICCP integrations, including utility data exchange with ERCOT, RTOs, or other ISOs
  • Familiarity with CAD and electrical schematics.
  • Experience with Autosol ACM or comparable utility-grade SCADA platform
  • Strong understanding of grid support operations, dispatch protocols, and telemetry architecture
  • Experience supporting distributed energy resources (DER), microgrids, or gas generation assets
  • Strong knowledge of distributed systems, infrastructure technologies (Windows servers, virtualization, networking, cybersecurity), and relational databases (e.g., MS SQL)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex, multi-layer communications and telemetry systems
  • Experience establishing and improving alarm management, change management, and system governance standards
  • Demonstrated track record of improving system reliability, reducing operational risk, and enhancing real-time system performance
  • Experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers

Benefits:

  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Prescription Drug Insurance
  • Company-Paid Life Insurance
  • Disability Insurance
  • Paid Family Leave
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Wellness Programs and Incentives
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan & Company Match
  • Paid Time Off – Sick & Vacation Time
