Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
McCarthy Building Companies is looking for Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) Technician, for our Water & Wasterwater team. This position is responsible for the installation, programming, troubleshooting and maintenance of VFDs and associated electrical/control systems used in water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role ensures reliable operation of pumps, motors, and automated processes critical to plant performance and regulatory compliance.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Install, configure, and commission low voltage (under 600V)VFDs for pumps, blowers, and other motor-driven equipment
  • Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting on VFDs, motors, and control circuits
  • Maintain and repair electrical systems (low and medium voltage) in treatment plants and lift stations
  • Program and adjust VFD parameters for optimal system performance and energy efficiency
  • Integrate VFDs with PLC and SCADA systems
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections on electrical and control equipment
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical manuals
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and minimize downtime
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
  • Document maintenance activities, system changes, and service reports

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED (Associate degree or technical certification preferred)
  • 2-5+ years of experience with VFDs in industrial, municipal, or water/wastewater environments
  • Strong understanding of:
    • AC/DC motors
    • Electrical systems and controls
    • Industrial automation
  • Experience with major VFD brands (e.g., ABB, Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams and troubleshoot complex systems
  • Valid driver's license
  • Experience in water or wastewater treatment facilities
  • Familiarity with PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc)
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems
  • Electrical license or Journeyman certification
  • OSHA safety training
  • Must have reliable transportation to/from the job site
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions
  • Must be self-motivated and can work well with others
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting/pushing/pulling of material weighing 50 pounds
  • Ability to squat, crawl, and work in confined spaces
  • Minimum age 18+
  • Proof of Identity and Employment Authorization
