Job description

Principal SCADA Engineer

Hybrid โ€” Denver, CO | $150,000โ€“$185,000 + STIP | US Citizenship required

Most Principal SCADA Engineers spend their careers on one side of the fence. Either consulting on systems someone else will run, or running systems someone else designed. This role is both.

Our client is an electric utility solutions firm built inside an operating utility platform. Through its sister company, they support multi-decade utility privatization contracts that include 50+ substations and a growing fleet of microgrids. The engineering team designs, commissions, and operates the same systems โ€” no handoffs, no silos, no "that's not our scope."

They're hiring a Principal SCADA Engineer to lead the design and execution of SCADA and ADMS systems across the client portfolio, including advanced microgrid projects in the 500kW to 10MW range.

What you'll own
  • SCADA and ADMS architecture for new builds and modernization projects across a national footprint of operating substations
  • Handsโ€‘on design, configuration, and commissioning of HMIs, RTUs, PLCs, and the communication backbone that ties them together
  • Integration of DERs into SCADA/ADMS for microgrid projects in active deployment
  • Cybersecurity posture across the SCADA estate
  • A bench of engineers who will learn the discipline from you

You're the subject matter expert. The team executes against your direction. When something goes sideways in commissioning or operations, you're the person on the call.

What makes this seat different

Full lifecycle, not slices. You design it, you commission it, you support it in operations. Most utility engineers see one phase. Here you see all of them, on the same assets, over years.

Real microgrid work at meaningful scale. 500kW to 10MW projects with actual DER integration. Not slideware.

Missionโ€‘critical environments. Several of the client sites are federal and military. The systems matter. The standards are real.

A platform with stability. Privatization contracts run on 50โ€‘year horizons. The work isn't going away when the next funding cycle ends.

Recognized culture. Named one of Denver's top workplaces in 2025. Hybrid schedule, provided lunches, real workโ€‘life balance. Familyโ€‘owned, intentionally built.

What you bring
  • 12+ years in SCADA, automation, or ADMS engineering, including 5+ years on substation or distribution SCADA
  • SME-level command of at least one major platform: Siemens WinCC, Wonderware, Survalent, SEL, OSI
  • Deep working knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, OPC, and PLC/RTU programming
  • Network design and SCADA cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Bachelor's in EE, CS, or equivalent operating experience
  • PE license preferred
  • US Citizenship required. You'll need to obtain Military Base Access clearance.
  • Valid driver's license. Travel to project sites runs around 20%.
Compensation

$150,000โ€“$185,000 base, depending on experience. Eligible for Short Term Incentive Plan. Full benefits โ€” medical, dental, life, 401(k) with company contribution, PTO and paid holidays.
