What does a satellite communication engineer do?

A Satellite Communication Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining communication systems that use satellites to transmit and receive data, voice, and video signals. They work on the technical aspects of satellite networks, including uplink and downlink frequencies, modulation schemes, and ground station equipment. Their work ensures reliable and efficient communication for applications such as television broadcasting, internet access, military operations, and disaster response. Satellite Communication Engineers also troubleshoot issues, monitor system performance, and may be involved in the development of new technologies to improve satellite communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a satellite communication engineer?

To thrive as a Satellite Communication Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or telecommunications engineering, strong knowledge of RF (radio frequency) principles, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with satellite ground station equipment, modulation/demodulation systems, and industry certifications such as CCNA or SATCOM-specific credentials are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills set standout professionals apart. These skills are crucial for designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex satellite communication systems that ensure reliable global connectivity.

What are some common challenges satellite communication engineers face when working with ground station equipment?

Satellite Communication Engineers often encounter challenges such as signal interference, equipment malfunctions, and maintaining reliable connectivity in adverse weather conditions. Troubleshooting these issues requires a strong understanding of RF systems and the ability to collaborate with network and hardware teams. Additionally, staying updated on the latest satellite protocols and regulatory requirements is essential for ensuring compliance and optimal performance. Effective communication with operations and support staff is key to resolving issues quickly and minimizing downtime.

What is the difference between Satellite Communication Engineer vs Satellite Systems Technician?

AspectSatellite Communication EngineerSatellite Systems Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related field; certifications like CCNA, Cisco, or RF certificationsDiploma or associate degree in Electronics or Telecommunications; technical certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, develop, and oversee satellite communication systems; often in offices or labsInstall, maintain, and repair satellite equipment; fieldwork and on-site troubleshooting
Employer & Industry UsageTelecom companies, satellite service providers, aerospace firmsSatellite service providers, telecom companies, maintenance firms

Satellite Communication Engineers focus on designing and developing satellite systems, requiring higher education and certifications. In contrast, Satellite Systems Technicians handle installation and maintenance tasks, often with technical diplomas. Both roles are essential in the satellite industry but differ in responsibilities and work settings.

Job description

What Vista Does

Vista Projects is an integrated engineering firm who has been solving complex challenges in the energy industry since 1985. We are innovators at our core. We continually find better, smarter ways to design and deliver oil and gas projects, and we are proud to be contributing on some of the most exciting low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments in the North America. For our people, that means meaningful, varied work and a real chance to shape how modern engineering gets done.
We are innovators in the energy industry. We actively find ways to improve how oil and gas projects are designed and delivered, and we are contributing to some remarkable low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments; including electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and gas-to-liquids (GTL) projects. We are headquartered in Calgary and maintain a satellite office in Houston.

Why We Do It

The world needs energy, and better engineering makes the projects that deliver it safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Our multi-discipline teams have designed some of the most challenging and successful projects in the North American energy sector, from early-stage studies and pilots to large-scale commercial expansions. We take pride in doing that work well, and just as much pride in continuously improving how we do it.

What You Would Do in This Role

The Senior Scheduler works closely with project managers, leaders, and other teams to ensure effective and proactive control of project plans and schedules. This role requires a strong commitment to excellence in the development and support of cost control, project management systems, processes, resources, and tools.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare (or assist in preparing) Level 1 to Level 3 EPC schedules for sustaining capital projects, with a particular focus on the critical path from engineering through procurement to construction.
  •  Lead and participate in interactive planning sessions; hold meetings with project managers, estimators, and engineers to review and refine preliminary schedules for initial distribution.
  •  Coordinate overall planning and scheduling activities across projects.
  •  Interface with engineering disciplines, project management, and clients (as required) to ensure accurate engineering and procurement data are reflected in schedules.
  •  Monitor, review, analyze, and report on schedule status throughout all project phases.
  •  Perform manpower resource loading for assigned schedules and prepare histograms and other charts as required.
  •  Manage project schedules, analyze variances, and evaluate project trends and schedule forecasts.
  •  Conduct schedule risk analyses.
  •  Assist in the preparation of schedule data for proposals and contracts.
  •  Take responsibility for the preparation, quality, and accuracy of project and proposal schedules.
  •  Perform in-depth “what-if” scenario, variance, and logic analyses.
  •  Provide coaching and mentoring to other planners and schedulers within the team.
  • Performing other duties as requested
Requirements
  • A recognized engineering or business degree, technical diploma, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6.
  • Strong knowledge of EPCM planning and project reporting.
  • Understanding of procurement, contracts, and construction management.
  • Advanced MS Excel skills for analysis and reporting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively.
  • Quality-focused with strong attention to detail, while maintaining a broad “whole project” perspective.
  • Ability to meet safety requirements for site visits.
  • 8+ years of planning and scheduling experience in an engineering, procurement, and construction environment.8 years or more of planning and scheduling experience in engineering, procurement, construction environment
