This role will support and modernize a critical legacy platform that enables integrated payables solutions for PNC's corporate clients, facilitating ACH, wire, and check-based payments domestically and internationally. As well as serve as a senior technical contributor responsible for the stability, compliance, and continuous operation of COBOL-based applications that support client implementation and ongoing maintenance.

The Software Engineer Sr (GOV) - COBOL Developer performs as a trusted technical partner to internal stakeholders by troubleshooting complex system issues and guiding teams through process improvements and federally mandated changes.

Core Responsibilities
  • Perform ongoing maintenance, support, and enhancement of mainframe-based COBOL applications supporting integrated payables and CPY mnemonic applications.
  • Diagnose and resolve upstream and downstream system issues impacting client payment processing and operational workflows.
  • Lead and implement federally mandated system updates and regulatory-driven changes that occur multiple times per year.
  • Coordinate with internal technology and business teams seeking to leverage or model similar payment capabilities, offering expertise, guidance, and process improvement recommendations.
  • Provide clear technical explanations, status updates, and risk assessments to senior leadership and business partners.
  • Ensure system reliability, accuracy, and compliance in a high-availability, transaction-driven environment.
Required Skills
  • Strong proficiency in COBOL development with hands-on experience in IBM z/OS mainframe environments.
  • Working knowledge of JCL, CICS, DB2, and VSAM.
  • Experience using tools and platforms such as SAS, NDM, FILE-AID, CompairX, Datamover, and BlueZone.
  • Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex systems issues across interconnected applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively within a legacy-focused, highly interdependent team.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to navigate organizational dynamics thoughtfully and diplomatically.
