Job DescriptionGeneral Objectives

Reporting to the Geology Manager, the Drill Services Supervisor typically works a 4x3. The Drill Services Supervisor will provide guidance and leadership to a team of geotechnicians, and ensure core shed, field duties, and drilling rigs (contractors) are operated in a safe and efficient manner. Provide both tactical and strategic support for the needs of the Resource Development Department to operate in an effective, efficient, and safe manner.

Key Areas of Responsibilities & Duties
  • Oversee drilling on property, tracking drill performance to include costs, mud usage, and recovery in Krux or equivalent software
  • Responsible for tracking usage of and maintaining adequate supply of drilling consumables
  • Work with contractors to build and maintain an effective safety culture, ensure SSR standards and policies are followed
  • Participate in developing exploration/drilling SOP’s.
  • Implement, train geotechnicians and drill contractors on the same
  • Conduct regular safety audits of drill rigs and follow-up on findings.
  • Make sure drilling and other contractors are complying with SSR policies
  • Provide site specific training to contractors (kick off or onboarding meetings)
  • Inspect equipment and laydown yard
  • Accurately reports drill locations, hole conditions, sample quality, sample recovery and delays to drilling.
  • Cor-ordinate with drilling contractor to achieve 100% sample recovery without compromising sample quality.
  • Conduct line out and safety meetings
  • Identify training needs of geotechnicians and co-ordinate providing the same through mine training department or external consultants
  • Develop geotechnicians with intent of building bench strength for future supervisors
  • Review Geotech career progression and co-ordinate with HR to develop improvement plans
  • Effectively communicates issues and needs to Geologist and drilling crews
  • Reports and participates in incident investigations and contractor’s safety meetings
  • Ensures work area inspections are done to standards and resolve issues
  • Ensures work areas are safe and free of hazards.
  • Performs Field Level Risk Assessments and other Risk assessment protocols as needed
  • Unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship including immediately reporting and mitigating spills and other environmental impacts
  • Conduct safety interactions with drill contractors
  • This role requires frequent interaction with department employees, supervision, management and vendors on a regular basis to provide assistance, service and support
  • Drive contractor compliance with SSR Drill Standards
  • Maintain gas monitors on all rigs
  • Ensure the fatigue management system is in place with weekly audits
  • Weekly progression meeting with contractor supervisors
  • Create scope of works to assist procurement with the RFP process
  • Monthly inventory of all drilling supplies to be ordered
  • Reconcile invoices every two weeks
Required Skills
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, in English using all standard forms of business communication
  • Familiarity and understanding of exploration process including different drilling techniques, sample quality and sampling methodologies
  • Computer viz., skills Microsoft packages, AutoCad, SAP or similar software. GIS and database software skills will be advantageous
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving skills, critical thinking and multitasking skills
  • Clear understanding and willingness to observe and practice company SOPs and policies
  • Strong understanding of safety policies and procedures relating to drilling core and RC
  • Must be licensed to fly a Drone or have the ability to obtain a license
  • Ability to adapt to changes
  • Experience in contract management
  • Knowledge of the QA QC program
  • Ability to use and teach survey tools for collars
  • Stong understanding of drill plan mapping
Required Experience

Previous drilling and minimum 3 years as a geo-technician Experience with exploration drilling, specific technical knowledge of air rotary and core drilling
