What is a Salesforce Commerce Developer?

A Salesforce Commerce Developer is a specialized software developer who designs, builds, and maintains e-commerce solutions using Salesforce Commerce Cloud. They work on customizing storefronts, integrating third-party services, and optimizing the online shopping experience for customers. These developers are skilled in web technologies like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, as well as Salesforce-specific tools and APIs. Their role is essential for businesses that want to create scalable, secure, and feature-rich online stores using Salesforce's e-commerce platform.

What are some common challenges Salesforce Commerce Developers face when integrating third-party systems?

Salesforce Commerce Developers often encounter challenges when integrating third-party systems, such as payment gateways, ERP solutions, or marketing tools. These challenges can include managing data synchronization, ensuring security and compliance, and handling differences in API standards or data formats. Effective troubleshooting and communication with external vendors are crucial, as is staying updated on best practices for Salesforce Commerce Cloud integrations. Successfully overcoming these challenges can lead to smoother operations and a more seamless customer experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Salesforce Commerce Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Salesforce Commerce Developer, you need strong programming skills in JavaScript, Java, and Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC), along with experience in e-commerce solutions and a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with Salesforce B2C Commerce (Demandware), APIs, version control systems like Git, and Salesforce certifications such as B2C Commerce Developer are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers work collaboratively and deliver user-centric solutions. These skills ensure robust, scalable, and efficient e-commerce platforms that meet business objectives and customer expectations.

WHO YOU ARE

The Digital Marketing Specialist will manage and optimize the online brand and shopping experience across owned channels and e-Retailer commerce sites, ensuring website functionality, content, design, navigation, and conversion paths support a seamless buyer journey. This hands-on role connects commerce, lifecycle marketing, UX, content, analytics, and cross-functional delivery to drive customer acquisition, engagement, conversion, and retention.

Our platform environment includes Salsify, Shopify, Klaviyo, Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC), Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and web analytics and reporting tools. We do not expect one person to be a subject matter expert on every platform. The successful candidate will bring broad digital fluency, practical depth in several areas, and the aptitude to learn unfamiliar systems, complete core workflows, translate business needs into clear requirements, and liaise with technical specialists and agency partners.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Manage and optimize product detail content across e-Retailer commerce sites, including product detail pages, A+ Content, features, attributes, copy, imagery, and listing quality to support brand standards and business goals.
  • Collaborate with product, sales, and marketing teams to improve digital shelf presentation, search performance, category relevance, and customer shopping experience.
  • Own day-to-day site functionality, promotional execution, landing pages, content updates, merchandising, releases, and quality assurance across Shopify- and SFCC-based platforms, ensuring digital experiences are accurate, intuitive, and easy to shop.
  • Partner with brand and media teams on organic and paid social campaigns, using performance insights to drive qualified traffic, engagement, conversion, and customer acquisition.
  • Define campaign and commerce KPIs; maintain decision-ready reporting using GA4, platform reporting, dashboards, and other available data sources.
  • Guide digital design and usability improvements by partnering with internal and agencies to improve page layouts, navigation, product presentation, SEO, accessibility, content quality, and visual consistency while maintaining brand standards and a customer-first shopping experience.
  • Partner with product, sales, customer service, IT, data, and operations teams on product, pricing, inventory, offer, order, and fulfillment requirements that affect the digital customer experience.

 REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business, communications, e-commerce, analytics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Four or more years of progressive experience in digital marketing, e-commerce, lifecycle or CRM marketing, web analytics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Proven experience in marketing copywriting with strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills. Ability to create clear, compelling, and persuasive content across websites, email campaigns, social media, advertising, and other marketing channels.
  • Hands-on experience in a commerce platform, an email or marketing automation platform, web analytics and measurement, digital content, SEO, and conversion optimization.
  • Enough technical fluency to navigate platforms, perform and quality-check core workflows, identify likely issues, and collaborate effectively with developers and specialists; deep coding or platform architecture expertise is not required.
  • Ability to convert data into clear findings, recommendations, priorities, and measurable next steps.
  • Strong project management, communication, writing, and stakeholder-management skills, with the judgment to balance speed, quality, customer impact, and business value.
  • Self-directed, curious, organized, and comfortable managing multiple brands, campaigns, and partners with limited supervision.
  • Working proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint or equivalent tools. Familiarity with dashboards, creative tools, or AI-enabled marketing workflows is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to travel approximately 5%.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with a mid-market commerce and lifecycle ecosystem, such as Shopify and Klaviyo, and/or an enterprise ecosystem, such as Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Experience with GA4, tag management, dashboards, campaign measurement, and e-commerce funnel analysis.
  • Working familiarity with digital accessibility, privacy, consent, and email deliverability practices.
  • Experience in consumer products, home improvement, durable goods, retail, or a multi-brand organization.

ENVIROMENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
