Job description

Are you ready to shape the future of one of Amazon's most unique customer experiences? Woot.com is seeking a Software Development Manager who combines deep technical expertise with exceptional people leadership to drive innovation in our customer-facing platforms. You'll lead a team that owns the complete customer journey-from our signature marketing shenanigans to seamless checkout experiences-while leveraging AI and modern engineering practices to solve complex problems with creative constraints.
This role is perfect for a hands-on engineering leader who thrives in ambiguity, sets an extremely high bar for engineering excellence, and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and dive into code alongside their team. You'll have the autonomy to make technical decisions that most Amazon teams never get to explore, direct access to customers through our forums, and the opportunity to build and grow an inclusive, high-performing team that delivers at pace.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team through effective hiring, mentoring, performance management, and skills development while fostering an inclusive culture of engineering excellence and innovation
- Drive the architecture, design, implementation, and delivery of scalable software systems that power the primary customer experience for Woot.com, from marketing integrations to checkout flows
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to define your team's vision, roadmap, and strategic priorities by working backwards from customer needs and balancing tactical execution with long-term goals
- Establish team structures, processes, and mechanisms that enable rapid delivery while maintaining the highest standards for code quality, system health, security, and operational excellence
- Jump into technical discussions and code when necessary, leveraging your strong software engineering background and AI proficiency to unblock your team and drive critical decisions
A day in the life
You'll start with daily standups where you connect with your team on progress and blockers, then shift to strategic planning sessions where you define roadmaps and allocate resources. Mid-day might find you in the code reviewing pull requests or pair programming to solve a particularly thorny problem. You'll have transparent conversations about performance and growth with team members, collaborate with product and operations partners on resourcing decisions, and engage directly with customers in the Woot forums to understand their needs firsthand.
About the team
The Woot.com team owns one of the broadest spans of the customer lifecycle at Amazon, managing everything from marketing integrations and customer engagement to the complete purchase experience. We pride ourselves on our scrappy, innovative approach and our ability to solve complex technical challenges under unique constraints. Our team has the freedom to leverage tools, technologies, and architectural choices that most Amazon teams never get to explore, giving us exceptional opportunities for creativity and impact. We maintain a direct connection with our customers through our forums, allowing us to rapidly iterate and deliver experiences that delight.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
