CAMPUS SAFETY - Security Officer

Position summary
The responsibilities of this position are to fulfill the needs of a Security Officer, capable of working in the Patrol and Dispatch Division. This position is designed to assist in shift coverage and will float between both divisions and all shifts (morning, afternoon, nights). When not on shift coverage, they will mostly work M-F on the afternoon shift. This position is considered an essential employee and will be responsible to work a shift schedule that can include; working during a section of a 24 hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours.
Qualifications summary
This position requires employees who perform well under high-stress situations and have excellent customer service skills. They must be detail oriented and capable of managing their daily tasks with little to no supervision. They must have great communication skills both verbally and in writing.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing. Duties and responsibilities

• General
  • Provides direction, support, and service to the campus in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Investigates all matters reported to the Office of Campus Safety, which could include burglaries, auto theft, vehicles accidents, lost and found property, fights, and/or any other criminal matter or reported/referred code of conduction violations which occurs on campus.
  • Creation and/or completion of incident reports
  • Maintains a professional skill level through continuing education courses pertaining to patrol operations, dispatch operations, and emergency preparedness.
  • Other duties as assigned.
• Patrol Division
  • Coordinates with local fire and law enforcement personnel for their response to the campus, assisting them with the performance of their duties.
  • Crowd control/management for graduation events or special events.
  • Enforces parking/driving regulations through the issuing of citations and arrangements/decisions to immobilize/or tow vehicles.
  • Ensures all campus buildings are secured and cleared of non-authorized individuals on a daily basis per the individual department schedule.
  • Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow-through of all investigative matters assigned.
  • Learns and enforces Standard Operating Procedures, Student Code of Conduct and general University policy.
  • Operates University vehicles during all weather conditions, including inclement weather.
  • Patrols the campus grounds and buildings by foot and vehicle for the intent of deterring crime on campus, identifying and responding to suspicious situations/individuals and hazardous environments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides financial escorts, providing for the safety/transport of the escorted or directly responsible for the safety/transport of monetary funds to and from off campus.
  • Provides service assistance calls to the campus community which may consist of escorts, jumpstarts, vehicle lock-outs, etc.
  • Reports in proper attire and is fit for duty for a minimum of ten minutes prior to shift start.
  • Reports maintenance problems and submits work orders to their supervisor who refers/or contacts the department responsible for mitigation.
  • Responds to all emergency calls on campus.
  • Responds to any disturbance, fight or domestic disputes reported on campus.
  • Responds to fire and security alarms.
  • Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of uniform and equipment, vehicle, radio, keys, etc.
• Dispatch Division
  • Communicates with local emergency services for response assistance.
  • Coordinates with on campus departments for report investigation.
  • Enforce parking & traffic regulations; including via video systems.
  • Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow-through of all investigative matters assigned.
  • Investigates and/or dispatches patrol officer for all matters reported to the Office of campus Safety, which could include burglaries, auto theft, vehicle accidents, lost and found property, fights, and or any other criminal matter or reported/referred code of conduction violations which occurs on campus.
  • Maintains communication and documents activity of patrol officers.
  • Monitor 911 Onsite Notification Line for outgoing 911 emergency phone calls.
  • Monitor Access Control System.
  • Monitor both fire and security alarm reporting system.
  • Monitors campus surveillance system.
  • Performs University Switchboard duties daily 5pm-9am (shift dependent).
  • Performs vehicle and bicycle registration activities.
  • Provides customer service activities for registration, citations, appeals, and general information.
  • Receive Lost/Found items for campus with proper documentation.
  • Receive reports from anonymous Tip Line.
  • Receives after-hours calls on behalf of University Housing Office (shift dependent).
  • Receives after-hours emergency call requests for Plant Services (shift dependent).
  • Regulates nighttime access onto the campus via gatehouse activities (shift dependent).
  • Responsible to activate University Emergency Alert System.
  • Searches applicable databases for vehicles, citations, and historical files as necessary including NIDA, Banner and vault.
  • Submit End of Shift (EOS) Reports.

Supervisory responsibilities
While this position does not provide employee correction or evaluation, they are responsible to provide the campus with direction in relation to emergencies or enforcing University policies.
Qualifications

• Must be able to work shift assignments.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must function well while under stress.
• Must have excellent human relation skills, dealing with a wide variety of people.
• Must have or obtain a valid Michigan driver's license.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Must pass a drug screening.

Education, Experience, and/or Certifications Must have or be capable of obtaining certifications:

• As a Campus Safety employee
  • APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator Language Skills
  • A formal law enforcement training academy (BCSD Reserve Officer Training Academy accepted)
  • Maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED.
  • FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • Additional cross-training and certification with Patrol is preferred. Must be capable of obtaining certification in:
    • Defensive Tactics (PPCT & OCAT)
    • Police One Certifications

Leadership & Received Direction Once trained, this position should function with limited direction and be responsible to identify daily tasks for the completion of their duties. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, distances, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to calculate statistical data. Other Skills To effectively complete their duties, must have skills in:

• Attention to detail in written word, spreadsheets, web-forms, or any form of written communication.
• Observation of evidence in physical and electronic formats
• In time management/self-management.
• Organization of files, timelines, and case workflows
• Fact finding and inquisitive nature to determine cause and effect.

Computer Skills Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Proficient in other evidence-based applications used for card access, alarm systems, and security cameras. Equipment/Software Used

• Communications equipment, including radios, phones, messaging applications (Teams)
• Alarm systems
• Evidence gathering equipment including cameras, document scanners, and other software applications/computers.
• Mobile surveillance camera kit
• Vehicles, including road/off-road vehicles

This position is a main point of contact for Campus Safety with the public. The employee is expected to meet the objectives of Campus Safety while promoting a Christian, friendly environment, both to our diverse campus as well as within the office.
Physical demands
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to use other senses to talk, hear, taste, and/or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, jump, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee will also be required to work in/be exposed to, all weather conditions associated with the State of Michigan.
Work environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. During these common activities an employee might be confronted with potentially dangerous situations associated with security type work. In the completion of these activities an employee will have access to a patrol vehicle and office. While completing these duties, the employee will be walking through campus grounds including sidewalks, parking lots, roadways, grass areas, and wooded trails. The employee will also be accessing buildings, from common spaces to classrooms, labs, mechanical/electrical rooms, residential spaces, roof-tops, or any other area belonging to the University. The employee may also work at a desk for 8-12 hour shifts.
