Job description

Senior Roadway Inspector
West Columbia, SC
Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is actively seeking Construction Inspectors to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team in Columbia, SC to support various transportation projects with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The inspector will monitor the work of contractors to ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, and quality standards for transportation projects of moderate to considerable complexity. In addition to inspection responsibilities, the inspector may be required to also provide inspection/project management, under the direction of a Project Manager. This Inspector will provide directions to junior inspectors on the project as needed. Qualified Inspectors will qualify for a $3000 sign-on bonus.
Responsibilities
  • Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
  • Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
  • Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
  • Monitor placement of pilings, reinforcing and structural steel, concrete, and backfill.
  • Verifies lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Perform accurate calculations and computations.
  • Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
  • Review contractor submittals for conformance to project documents and specifications.
  • Document and immediately report any non-compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
  • Recording Daily Work Reports to include quantities in Site Manager and for American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASTHO) projects.

Qualifications
  • Above average math and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US.
  • Must have a current driver's license with a safe driving record; ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Certifications and Training Requirements
The following certifications help ensure that CEI technicians comply with SCDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM standards for transportation infrastructure projects. ICE provides training for inspectors to obtain the following certifications and is invested in their professional growth. Senior-Level Inspector Experience and Certification Requirements:
  • HS diploma required or equivalent required.
  • Associate or BS in Civil Engineering is a plus.
  • A minimum of ten years of inspection experience is required.
  • The following certifications are required.
    • SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
    • SCDOT Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
    • SCDOT Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
    • ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician - Grade 1
    • Foundations Technician
    • Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
    • Hazmat

Physical Demands
This position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds sometimes on a frequent basis. The employee must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperatures. The employee must be able to visually examine construction materials and finished structures and work in various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites, and heavy equipment.
Expected Hours of Work
This position is full-time (40 hours per week). The CEI office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing one unpaid hour for lunch each day. While overtime is generally not anticipated, occasional projects or deadlines may necessitate additional hours, compensated at time and a half. Work schedules may vary based on project demands, some night and weekend work may be required.
