What types of projects and responsibilities can a safety engineer intern expect to handle during their internship?

As a Safety Engineer Intern, you will typically support experienced safety engineers by assisting with risk assessments, safety audits, and incident investigations. Interns often help review safety procedures, participate in site inspections, and contribute to the development of safety training materials. You may also analyze data to identify trends in workplace incidents and recommend improvements. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to safety regulations and collaborative problem-solving within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a safety engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Safety Engineer Intern, you need a basic understanding of occupational health and safety principles, risk assessment, and a relevant engineering or safety-related academic background. Familiarity with safety management systems, OSHA regulations, and tools like incident reporting software or hazard analysis programs is beneficial. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for identifying hazards, ensuring compliance, and helping maintain a safe work environment.

What does a safety engineer intern do?

A Safety Engineer Intern assists in identifying and mitigating potential workplace hazards to ensure a safe environment for employees. They typically work under the supervision of safety engineers and help conduct inspections, analyze accident reports, and support the development of safety procedures. Interns may also participate in training sessions and help implement safety programs to comply with local, state, and federal regulations. Their role is crucial in promoting occupational health and safety within an organization.

Job description

Navitas Systems LLC, a leader in comprehensive energy storage solutions, was formed in 2011 with the merger of MicroSun Innovative Energy Storage Solutions and MicroSun Electronics, and the acquisition of lithium battery company A123 Systemsโ€™ Government Solutions Group. In 2019, East Penn Manufacturing, one of the worldโ€™s leading battery manufacturers, acquired majority interest in Navitas Systems. In SEVEN remarkable decades, East Penn has grown from a one-room shop with a product line of five automotive batteries to one of the worldโ€™s leading battery manufacturers with over 10,500 full-time employees, 515 product designs, operations around the world, and hundreds of awards for industry excellence.

At our Navitas facilities we engage in the research, design, development, and manufacture of advanced lithium cells and energy storage products and systems for both commercial customers and U.S. Government/military customers. We invest in our people, they are and always will be the heart of this company. Are you ready to join a family-owned enterprise committed to honoring the contributions of everyone? Then Navitas is the right place for you.

The Quality Intern will support the Quality department by analyzing the company's current warranty process from end to end. This role will be responsible for documenting how warranty claims are currently handled, identifying inefficiencies and bottlenecks, benchmarking against best practices, and recommending ways to streamline and improve the process โ€” including the possibility of a new system or tool for managing warranty claims going forward.

  • Analyze the current warranty process from claim intake through resolution and closeout
  • Map the existing workflow, identifying each step, system, and stakeholder involved
  • Review historical warranty data to identify trends, recurring issues, and cycle-time drivers
  • Identify inefficiencies, redundant steps, and manual work that could be streamlined or automated
  • Benchmark current practices against industry standards for warranty management
  • Evaluate current tools and systems (e.g., Smartsheet, ERP, QMS) used to track and manage warranty claims
  • Research and recommend potential new systems, software, or process changes to improve efficiency
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to gather input and validate findings
  • Document proposed process improvements, including workflows, templates, and criteria
  • Provide weekly progress updates to the Quality Manager

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Quality Engineering, Business, or a related field
  • Strong analytical, process-mapping, and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with process improvement concepts (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, root cause analysis) is a plus
  • Comfortable working with data in spreadsheets or quality/business systems
  • Ability to work independently, ask clarifying questions, and communicate findings clearly
  • Interest in manufacturing, quality systems, or process engineering
