As of Sep 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for sae j1939 in the United States is $34.94, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $27.16 and $40.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is SAE J1939?

SAE J1939 is a communication protocol developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for networking and diagnostics among vehicle components, especially in heavy-duty and commercial vehicles. It defines how electronic control units (ECUs) communicate over a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus to share data such as engine speed, temperature, and diagnostics. This standard helps ensure compatibility and interoperability between different manufacturers' systems and components within vehicles like trucks, buses, and agricultural equipment.

What does a J1939 protocol engineer do?

Engineers working with the SAE J1939 protocol typically spend much of their day configuring and troubleshooting communication between electronic control units (ECUs) on heavy-duty vehicles and industrial equipment. This involves interpreting data messages, ensuring compatibility across devices, and using specialized diagnostic tools to monitor network performance. Collaboration is common, as engineers often coordinate with software developers, system integrators, and field technicians to implement or debug solutions. Staying updated on protocol revisions and compliance standards is also an ongoing part of the role.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work with SAE J1939?

To thrive as a J1939 Protocol Engineer, you need a strong background in embedded systems engineering, CAN bus communication, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with diagnostic tools like Vector CANoe, experience with J1939 protocol stacks, and certifications in automotive or industrial communication standards are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork enhance performance in this technical field. These competencies ensure reliable implementation and troubleshooting of J1939 networks, which are critical for the performance and safety of heavy-duty vehicles and machinery.

What is the difference between Sae J1939 vs CAN Bus Technician?

AspectSae J1939CAN Bus Technician
CertificationsISO 16844, SAE J1939 standardsCAN bus system certifications, automotive or industrial networking
Work EnvironmentHeavy-duty vehicles, trucks, agricultural equipmentAutomotive, industrial machinery, or vehicle electronics
Industry UsageCommercial vehicle communication protocolsVehicle network troubleshooting and repair

While Sae J1939 focuses on a specific communication protocol used in heavy-duty vehicles, a CAN Bus Technician specializes in diagnosing and repairing CAN bus networks across various vehicle types. Both roles require knowledge of vehicle electronics, but Sae J1939 technicians specifically work with the SAE J1939 standard, whereas CAN Bus Technicians handle broader CAN network issues.

Description

Job Purpose:

The System Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of electro-hydraulic control systems, machine electrical architectures, and embedded controls software for off-highway equipment. This position owns system architecture from concept through production release. Works cross-functionally with mechanical, hydraulic, manufacturing, procurement and service teams to deliver robust, safe, and compliant machines.

Essential Functions:

  • System Architecture & Design: Defines and documents machine-level electrical, electro-hydraulic, and control system architecture, including controller selection, I/O allocation, CAN network maps, and power distribution.
  • Embedded Controls Software: Develops or communicates with outside suppliers the requirements for software, using applications such as Danfoss PLUS+1, and CODESYS (IEC 61131-3), C and C++ and Parker IQAN for machine control solutions.
  • CAN / J1939 Communication: Designs and configures CAN and SAE J1939 networks between ECUs, engines, transmissions, telematics, and displays.
  • 3D Integration & PLM: Uses 3D software such as Siemens NX to package electrical controls, harnesses, sensors in the machine model while managing revisions, BOMs, and release workflows in Siemens Teamcenter.
  • Wire Harness & Electrical Schematics: Designs production-ready wire harnesses using IGE-XAO and AutoCAD or DraftSight (schematics, from-to lists, connector tables, manufacturing drawings) and selects wire gauges, connectors, seals, and terminations suited to off-highway environments; coordinates with harness suppliers on design considerations.
  • System Troubleshooting & Validation: Leads troubleshooting of prototypes and training for production machines. Works with Engineering Technicians to development and write validation plans.
  • Field Support & Continuous Improvement: Supports testing, customer visits, and warranty investigations, analyzes test and field data and proposes design improvements, ECRs/ECOs.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Produces and maintains system requirements, FMEAs, , and technical files supporting SAE J1939, ISO/CE Machinery Regulation and EPA requirements.
  • Project Execution & Collaboration: Manages multiple development projects concurrently, works with outside suppliers, and other business units.
  • Tools & Training: Is fluent in Microsoft Office Suite and standard engineering computing tools; learns new development software and attends training as required to maintain competency.
