What is a SaaS system administrator?

SaaS System Administrators are IT professionals responsible for managing and maintaining software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications used by an organization. Their duties include configuring user access, ensuring data security, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues with cloud-based software platforms like Salesforce, Microsoft 365, or Google Workspace. They also coordinate updates, integrate SaaS solutions with other systems, and provide user support. SaaS System Administrators play a key role in optimizing cloud software usage and ensuring business continuity.

How does a SaaS system administrator typically collaborate with development and support teams?

A SaaS System Administrator works closely with both development and support teams to ensure the SaaS platform runs smoothly and securely. They often coordinate with developers to deploy new releases, automate processes, and troubleshoot application-level issues. Collaboration with support teams is essential for incident response and user issue resolution, often involving root cause analysis and proactive system monitoring. This cross-functional teamwork helps maintain high system uptime and a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SaaS system administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SaaS System Administrator, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, systems administration, and networking, often supported by a degree in IT or computer science. Familiarity with SaaS platforms (like Salesforce or Microsoft 365), identity management tools, and certifications such as CompTIA Cloud+ or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you manage incidents and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure reliable system operations, secure data management, and seamless user experiences in dynamic cloud environments.

Job description

Peak Energy

Job Title: IT System Administrator (Burlingame)

Location: Burlingame, California

Department: IT

Reports To: Senior IT Manager

Position Type: Full-time, In-person

About the Company

Peak Energy is the first American venture to advance globally proven sodium-ion battery systems as the storage standard for the new era of renewable energy on a resilient grid.

Sodium-ion is cheap, readily available, and safe — making it the leading contender in a rapidly evolving market.

Our leadership team is powered by decades of expertise in scaling gigawatt-level innovation at world-class companies such as Tesla, Northvolt, Apple, Powin, Enovix, Zipline, Solid Power, SunPower, and Fluence. We are backed by strategic investment and product partners including TDK Ventures, Eclipse Ventures, and GM Ventures.

We recently announced America's first sodium-ion grid storage factory in Sacramento with production starting Q1 2027, and over $1B in signed customer commitments including Jupiter Power and Energy Vault.

About the Role - IT System Administrator

Peak Energy is looking for an IT System Administrator to be the primary hands-on IT owner in our Burlingame office. This is a classic IT support role focused on keeping our engineers and business teams productive — end-user support, workstation and endpoint management, SaaS administration, office infrastructure, and light physical infrastructure work like network cable runs and AV setup.

You'll support a fast-growing team of hardware, software, cell, and manufacturing engineers with real workstation and infrastructure needs — CAD workstations, high-compute environments, engineering tooling, and modern collaboration platforms. You'll also partner with the Sacramento site (where an IT System Administrator handles factory infrastructure) to ensure our systems, security, and identity infrastructure work seamlessly across sites.

This role reports to the Senior IT Manager and works closely with the People team, Facilities team, and site leaders across the company.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

End-user IT & Support

  • Serve as the primary IT support contact for Burlingame employees: help desk, laptop and workstation provisioning, imaging, endpoint management, and on-site troubleshooting.
  • Manage the equipment lifecycle — procurement, asset tracking, retrieval, refresh cycles — across a growing employee population.
  • Own new-hire IT onboarding and departing-employee offboarding in partnership with the People team.
  • Support executives, engineers, and business teams with responsive, high-quality service.

Office Infrastructure

  • Maintain Burlingame office infrastructure: network, Wi-Fi, VoIP, printers, AV / conference rooms, and physical security systems.
  • Perform light cable runs and terminations for network drops, AV, and workstation setups as the office layout evolves.
  • Coordinate with Facilities on office moves, expansions, and new-hire desk setups.
  • Administer our SaaS stack — Entra AD, Atlassian, and the software tools we use across engineering, business, and operations.
  • Support identity and access management: SSO (Okta or similar), MFA, provisioning/deprovisioning, and access reviews across our SaaS ecosystem.

Security & Compliance Support

  • Enforce endpoint compliance — patching, encryption, MDM policies — across all Burlingame devices.
  • Support the company's readiness for compliance frameworks — evidence gathering, access reviews, control operations.
  • Enforce access controls, password policies, and least-privilege access in partnership with the Senior IT Manager.

Vendors & Cross-Site Support

  • Manage day-to-day relationships with IT vendors and MSPs; escalate to the Senior IT Manager on contracts and larger commitments.
  • Partner with the Sacramento IT System Administrator to keep corporate systems, security, and identity infrastructure aligned across sites.
  • Support our Broomfield office on IT needs as required.

What You'll Bring (Qualifications)

  • 4+ years of hands-on IT experience, ideally in a fast-growing company or engineering-heavy environment.
  • Strong end-user support skills — laptop imaging, endpoint troubleshooting, help desk operations.
  • Solid working knowledge of networking basics — Wi-Fi, switches, VLANs, DHCP/DNS — and comfort with light physical work (cable runs, terminations, AV setup).
  • Deep familiarity with Azure/Entra AD (or equivalent SSO), and modern MDM/endpoint tools (Intune).
  • Comfort supporting engineers with meaningful compute/workstation needs (CAD, hardware development, high-performance computing).
  • Practical familiarity with security fundamentals — endpoint protection, patching, access controls.
  • Excellent communicator who's calm under pressure and warm with users.
  • Willingness and ability to be onsite in Burlingame 4-5 days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior IT support experience at a Series B/C hardware startup or engineering-focused company.
  • Experience contributing to SOC 2 or ISO 27001 audits is a plus.
  • Certifications: Recent CompTIA A+/Network+/Security+, ITIL, or similar.
  • Scripting or automation skills (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for repetitive IT tasks.

Peak Energy is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. We strongly encourage women, people of color, and individuals from underrepresented groups to apply. We value skills, potential, and perspective over specific credentials. If you're excited about this role but your experience doesn't look perfect on paper, we still want to hear from you.

  • Be a Good Person - Kindness, collaboration and teamwork.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this role is $110,000–$150,000, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills. Our competitive benefits package includes:

  • Flexible time off

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Strong 401(k) plan
