Rust is valued in quantitative finance for its high performance, memory safety, and concurrency support, making it suitable for processing large volumes of financial data. Rust Quants typically work in hedge funds, investment banks, or fintech companies, where they design and implement efficient, reliable software to support trading and analytics. Their work often involves collaborating with data scientists, traders, and other engineers.

How does a Rust quant typically collaborate with other teams within a financial institution?

A Rust Quant often works closely with traders, data engineers, and risk analysts to develop and optimize quantitative models and trading algorithms. Collaboration involves translating financial strategies into efficient, production-ready Rust code, and ensuring that the models integrate seamlessly with existing systems. Regular communication is essential to clarify requirements, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve performance. Job description

The financial industry is growing at a record pace, but our data providers are still stuck in the past — with cumbersome onboarding processes, complicated APIs, slow infrastructure, and expensive licensing costs.

Databento is the market data platform for modern finance. The company provides real-time and historical data across futures, options, and equities through a unified API. By owning the entire market data stack end-to-end, Databento is the first platform of its kind to combine the performance and reliability demanded by the world's leading trading firms with a dramatically simpler developer experience. Our team includes alumni of Two Sigma, Citadel Securities, Flow Traders, Tower Research, PDT Partners, SIG, and other top quantitative firms.

We're looking for a midlevel or senior IC to join our Platform/API engineering team. You'll be responsible for building, maintaining, and promoting our JavaScript client library, working closely with our design team to bring production-ready interfaces to life. This role is primarily focused on TypeScript/JavaScript, with some full-stack/Python work as well.

Responsibilities
  • Own, build, and maintain our JavaScript client library, ensuring it is robust, well-tested, and easy for external users to integrate with.
  • Integrate native libraries into JavaScript/TypeScript code using tools like N-API, node-addon-api, or Wasm.
  • Build responsive, performant front-end applications using React, Redux, Vite, Web Workers, and WebSockets.
  • Contribute to full-stack projects, including backend work in Python (or Rust), REST API design, and database/migration work.
  • Work between design and engineering teams to translate designs (e.g. Figma handoffs) into production-ready components and design systems.
  • Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines, including publishing to npm.
  • Document components using Storybook or similar tooling.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure smooth feature rollouts and updates.
Preferred background
  • Experience working between high-performing design and engineering teams, including production-ready design systems and tools (e.g. Figma handoffs).
  • Proficiency with React, Redux, Vite, Web Workers, and WebSockets.
  • Background in trading, market data, or quantitative finance.
  • Hands-on backend experience building APIs, working with databases, and migrations.
  • Full-stack experience with backends in Python or Rust, including REST API design.
  • Familiarity with Storybook or similar component documentation tooling.
  • Good communication skills and work ethic for a remote workplace.
