Rust Programming Internship information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Programming Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Programming Intern, you need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, proficiency in Rust, and familiarity with systems programming concepts. Experience with tools like Cargo, Git, and common Rust libraries, as well as coursework or certifications in programming, are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and grow in a team environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to real-world projects, adapting quickly, and maximizing learning during the internship.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Rust Programming Internship?

As a Rust Programming Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of real-world projects that may include developing backend services, optimizing code for performance and safety, or contributing to open-source Rust libraries. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced developers, participate in code reviews, and get hands-on experience with tools and frameworks commonly used in Rust development. This role provides a supportive environment for learning best practices, improving problem-solving skills, and gaining exposure to modern software engineering workflows.

What is a Rust Programming Internship?

A Rust Programming Internship is a temporary position designed for students or early-career professionals to gain hands-on experience working with the Rust programming language. Interns typically collaborate on software development projects, contribute to codebases, and learn about modern systems programming under the guidance of experienced mentors. These internships help participants develop practical skills in Rust, problem-solving, and teamwork, and can serve as a pathway to a full-time role in software engineering.

What is the difference between Rust Programming Internship vs Rust Developer?

AspectRust Programming InternshipRust Developer

Job description

About This Role

Summer internships will range between the months of May and August. All dates dependent upon the university schedule of the selected students. Internships are full-time and on-site in Los Angeles, CA.

The Mantari Software Engineering Internship provides an opportunity to work on the software systems that power next-generation sensor platforms and AI-driven weather intelligence, contributing directly to products deployed in defense and weather applications. Interns will join a fast-paced team environment, collaborating on software development, data pipelines, and deployment efforts across both cloud and edge computing environments.

As a lean, early-stage team, every contributor has a meaningful impact, and that includes our interns. You'll take on real ownership of projects, work directly alongside senior engineers, and see your contributions shape products that are actively being delivered to customers. Internships at Mantari are optimal for students looking to grow technically and professionally while working on high-impact projects in a startup environment. We're dedicated to providing an experience that will let your decisions and contributions help drive Mantari's success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of software for sensor data ingestion, processing, and visualization across Mantari's platform
  • Support the design and implementation of APIs, microservices, and data pipelines for weather and radar applications
  • Write clean, tested code and participate in code reviews to maintain high engineering standards
  • Participate in design reviews and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to meet system and integration requirements
  • Support deployment and DevOps workflows, including CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure
  • Support field test operations, including software configuration, data collection, and remote debugging
Basic Qualifications
  • Junior or Senior academic standing
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field
  • Strong understanding of core software concepts, with completed coursework in:
    • Data Structures and Algorithms
    • Operating Systems
    • Databases or Systems Programming
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C/C++, or Rust)
  • Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment
Bonus Qualifications
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in a technical role
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker), CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure-as-code
  • Exposure to real-time data systems, embedded software, or ML/AI frameworks
  • Demonstrated success in technical extracurriculars (e.g., student project teams, hackathons, open-source contributions, personal projects, etc.)
Projects You May Work On

Intern projects will be tailored to company needs and student skillsets closer to the start date. Example projects include:

  • Build or extend data pipelines for ingesting and processing real-time sensor and radar data
  • Develop internal tools or dashboards for visualizing weather and environmental datasets
  • Contribute to edge computing software for deployed sensor platforms
  • Build and improve automated testing and CI/CD infrastructure
  • Develop API integrations connecting Mantari's platform to customer-facing applications
