What are Rust Linux Kernel developers?

Rust Linux Kernel developers are software engineers who contribute to the Linux kernel using the Rust programming language. They focus on writing new kernel modules or components in Rust, aiming to improve safety, security, and maintainability compared to traditional C code. These developers typically have a deep understanding of both systems programming and the Linux kernel architecture. Their work is part of an ongoing effort to gradually integrate Rust into the kernel alongside existing C code.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Linux Kernel Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Linux Kernel Developer, you need deep knowledge of systems programming, strong proficiency in Rust and C, and experience with Linux kernel internals. Familiarity with build systems (e.g., Make), version control (Git), and relevant certifications such as Linux Foundation Certified Engineer are typically valuable. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure robust, secure, and maintainable kernel contributions while facilitating smooth teamwork in complex open-source environments.

What is the difference between Rust Linux Kernel vs C Linux Kernel Developer?

AspectRust Linux KernelC Linux Kernel Developer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of Rust programming, Linux kernel basicsProficiency in C, Linux kernel development experience
Work EnvironmentContributing to Linux kernel modules using Rust, Linux environmentDeveloping and maintaining Linux kernel code in C
Industry UsageEmerging in kernel development, experimental projectsStandard in Linux kernel development
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for language choice in kernel modulesTraditional role, baseline for kernel development

The main difference between a Rust Linux Kernel developer and a C Linux Kernel Developer lies in the programming language used. Rust developers focus on leveraging Rust's safety features for kernel modules, while C developers work with the traditional C language. Both roles require Linux kernel knowledge, but Rust is newer and less widespread in kernel development, making it an emerging area compared to the well-established C role.

What are some common challenges faced when working on Rust integration within the Linux kernel, and how do teams typically address them?

A frequent challenge in this role is bridging the gap between Rust and the existing C-based Linux kernel codebase. This includes ensuring memory safety, managing interoperability between the two languages, and adhering to strict kernel coding standards. Teams often address these challenges through extensive code reviews, collaborative discussions on kernel mailing lists, and by actively participating in the upstream kernel and Rust-for-Linux communities. Continuous learning and communication are essential, as both the Rust integration and kernel development methodologies are rapidly evolving.

Job description

In a world of possibilities, pursue one with endless opportunities. Imagine Next! At Parsons, you can imagine a career where you thrive, work with exceptional people, and be yourself. Guided by our leadership vision of valuing people, embracing agility, and fostering growth, we cultivate an innovative culture that empowers you to achieve your full potential. Unleash your talent and redefine what's possible. Job Description: Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Cloud Routing Software Developer to join our team as we solve novel problems at the intersection of networking, cryptography, and systems engineering! You will design, build, and support secure network infrastructure that protects sensitive communications across distributed environments. This is a hands-on role. You will architect solutions, write code, deploy systems, manage production infrastructure, and troubleshoot complex issues at the packet level alongside a small, high-autonomy, new product team. Your work directly contributes to matters of national security. You will help the team evolve a TRL-5 prototype system into a TRL-8 product in support of a classified customer pilot deployment. What You'll Be Doing * Architect and operate encrypted overlay networks across geographically distributed cloud and on-prem infrastructure
* Implement and manage cryptographic key lifecycles - generation, distribution, rotation, and revocation
* Provision and harden Linux-based systems, automate deployments, and maintain CI/CD pipelines
* Diagnose complex network failures using packet captures, structured telemetry, and protocol-level analysis
* Build internal tooling, dashboards, and control-plane APIs for infrastructure orchestration
* Support the development and implementation of intrusion detection, fault isolation, and recovery tools and procedures
What Required Skills You'll Bring * Bachelor in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
* 5+ years in network engineering, security engineering, or systems infrastructure
* Networking depth: IP routing, tunneling (WireGuard, IPsec), overlay networks, and comfort working at every layer of the OSI Model
* Systems programming: Production experience in C++ and Go; scripting fluency in Python and Bash; working knowledge of Node.js
* Linux proficiency: systemd, iptables/nftables, TUN/TAP interfaces, kernel tuning - you live in the terminal
* Applied cryptography: Hands-on with AEAD ciphers, key derivation (HKDF), public-key exchange (X25519), and TLS - not just theory
* AWS/Google Cloud operations: EC2, VPC networking, IAM, and infrastructure-as-code in a production environment
* Troubleshooting instinct: You can trace a packet through a multi-hop encrypted chain and figure out where it died - even when nothing logs an error
* Ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment
* An active Top Secret security clearance is required for this position
What Desired Skills You'll Bring * Relevant certification (Security+, CCNA/CCNP, AWS SA, or similar) preferred
* Experience with QUIC, DPDK/XDP, or high-performance packet processing
* Background in privacy-enhancing technologies or traffic analysis resistance
* Contributions to open-source networking or cryptography projects
* Rust experience for performance-critical components Security Clearance Requirement: An active Top Secret security clearance is required for this position.
