What are Rust Engineers?

Rust Engineers are software developers who specialize in using the Rust programming language to build reliable, efficient, and safe systems. They often work on performance-critical applications such as backend services, embedded software, systems programming, and blockchain technologies. Rust Engineers are valued for their ability to write code that minimizes bugs and security vulnerabilities, leveraging Rust's strict compiler and memory safety features. Their expertise is increasingly sought after in industries where safety, speed, and concurrency are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Engineer, you need a strong understanding of systems programming concepts, the Rust language, and experience with software development best practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Cargo, and knowledge of CI/CD pipelines are typically required. Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding Rust Engineers apart. These skills and qualifications are essential for building reliable, high-performance, and secure software systems in collaborative development environments.

What are some common challenges Rust Engineers face when integrating Rust with existing systems?

Rust Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating Rust into codebases written in other languages, such as C, C++, or Python. These challenges can include managing foreign function interfaces (FFI), ensuring memory safety across language boundaries, and handling differences in build systems and tooling. Collaboration with teams familiar with legacy systems is often essential to navigate these complexities, and clear documentation is key to successful integration. Over time, these challenges can deepen your understanding of system interoperability and lead to broader career opportunities in systems programming.

What is the difference between Rust Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectRust EngineerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related, familiarity with RustBachelor's in Computer Science or related, general programming skills

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

Anduril Intelligence Systems (AIS) is focused on positioning Anduril as a lead provider of specialized engineering and products for Intelligence Community (IC) customers. We work within the IC to understand their requirements, shape their concepts of operation, and deliver exquisite capability across their problem set. We aim to develop and deploy critically needed capabilities that address our customers' most pressing national security requirements.
ABOUT THE JOB
As Senior Engineer, Edge-Cloud Reliability, you'll own a net-new, architecturally critical function: the hub-and-spoke contract between the cloud and our on-prem failover edge nodes. You'll ensure on-prem nodes mirror cloud architecture at small scale, keep operating through Degraded, Disconnected, Intermittent, and Limited (DDIL) conditions, and reconcile cleanly with the hub on reconnect - owning everything from identity federation and degraded auth to data reconciliation, config-drift automation, and DDIL reliability testing. You'll also anchor the sub-team, setting technical direction and mentoring ICs. This role requires a strong software background (Go/Rust/Python), distributed-systems fundamentals, cloud architecture depth (GCP preferred), comfort at the edge, and demonstrated ownership of a reliability/SRE or platform-engineering charter.
WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Identity federation & degraded auth - extend centralized Keycloak/LDAP identity to disconnected edge; cached-credential authentication when the hub is unreachable; propagate RBAC-by-operation/group to spokes.
  • Data reconciliation & state consistency - own the cloudedge data-refresh contract: DSB migration, entity-persist service, CoTv2 bilateral consistency, un-egress republishing cache.
  • Config / architecture drift - automate propagation of cloud-architecture changes (DSB, NCC hub-spoke, DNS) to every edge NixOS closure so spokes never silently fall out of parity.
  • DDIL reliability mandate - define and test failover/reconnect behavior against the High-Availability / DDIL ConOps
  • Set the technical direction for the sub-team; mentor and receive the support IC.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently possesses and is able to maintain an active U.S. Top Secret / SCI Clearance
  • Software background is mandatory
  • Strong in a systems language (Go/Rust/Python), distributed-systems fundamentals (consensus, conflict resolution, eventual consistency).
  • Cloud architecture depth (GCP preferred - VPC, IdP, networking) and comfort at the edge (on-prem, bare-metal deployments).
  • Willing to travel as needed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ownership of a reliability/SRE or platform-engineering charter.
