What is Rust development?

Rust development refers to the process of building software applications using the Rust programming language. Rust is known for its focus on safety, performance, and concurrency, making it ideal for creating reliable and efficient systems, such as web servers, command-line tools, and embedded devices. Developers use Rust to write code that minimizes common programming errors like null pointer dereferencing and data races, thanks to its strict compiler checks and ownership model. The Rust ecosystem includes a rich package manager (Cargo) and a supportive community, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust developer?

To thrive as a Rust Developer, you need strong programming fundamentals, proficiency in Rust, and a solid understanding of systems programming concepts, often supported by a computer science degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), build tools like Cargo, and knowledge of concurrent and asynchronous programming are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help developers stand out in complex project environments. These skills ensure the creation of safe, efficient, and reliable software, leveraging Rust's unique strengths for high-performance applications.

What are common challenges Rust developers face when working on large-scale projects, and how can they overcome them?

Rust developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases and ensuring efficient collaboration with teammates. The strict ownership and borrowing rules in Rust can initially slow development, especially when integrating with legacy systems or external libraries. To overcome these hurdles, teams typically adopt clear coding standards, make use of Rust's robust module system for code organization, and leverage tools like cargo workspaces for dependency management. Regular code reviews and open communication also help maintain code quality and prevent integration issues.

How to become a Rust developer?

To become a Rust developer, you should learn the Rust programming language through official tutorials and documentation, gain experience with systems programming, and practice building projects. Familiarity with tools like Cargo and understanding of memory safety concepts are also important. Earning certifications or contributing to open-source Rust projects can further enhance your skills and employability.

What does a Rust developer do?

A Rust developer writes and maintains software using the Rust programming language, focusing on performance, safety, and concurrency. They often work on system-level applications, embedded systems, or performance-critical software, utilizing tools like Cargo and adhering to best coding practices. Strong knowledge of systems programming and debugging skills are essential for this role.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day
Siemens Energy is looking for a hands-on Lead Developer to provide technical leadership for an AI Engineering and Service Assistant. You will guide a distributed, cross-functional development team that is building a unified Azure-based solution to help engineers securely access knowledge, interact with engineering tools, and complete complex workflows more efficiently.
This role combines solution architecture, technical leadership, and active software development. You will translate product priorities into a modular technical roadmap, make design decisions across the user interface, APIs, orchestration, data ingestion, retrieval, access control, and cloud infrastructure, and help developers deliver production-quality increments across development, QA, and production environments.
The position is suited to an experienced full-stack and AI application developer who can bring structure and engineering rigor to a team with complementary strengths in UI development, ETL and data integration, cloud infrastructure, access control, engineering-tool integration, and domain knowledge. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading through influence, mentoring internal and external contributors, and remaining close enough to the code to resolve difficult technical issues.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Own the end-to-end technical architecture and development strategy for the AI Engineering and Service Assistant, balancing near-term delivery with a scalable long-term design.
  • Lead architecture decisions for modular services, REST APIs, user interfaces, agent and tool orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation,
  • At least 2 years of experience as a technical lead, lead developer, solution architect, or senior engineer responsible for important design decisions, technical trade-offs, and mentoring other developers.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering production-grade, cloud-hosted full-stack applications, including architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, operational support, and CI/CD release practices.
  • Strong Python development skills and practical experience with modern web APIs, asynchronous processing, containerized services, secure enterprise integrations, authentication, authorization, and one or more contemporary front-end frameworks such as React.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM or AI applications using retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector or hybrid search, prompt orchestration, tool calling, grounded-response evaluation, and relevant Microsoft Azure services such as Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, Cosmos DB, Blob Storage, Functions or App Services, identity services, and monitoring.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with agentic architecture, multi-agent orchestration, MCP or comparable tool-integration patterns, knowledge graphs, SQL agents, enterprise search, and LLM observability or evaluation tools.
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory or equivalent ETL/ELT tooling, document ingestion, OCR or multimodal extraction, metadata design, large-scale indexing pipelines, and model-version migration.
  • Experience with React and TypeScript plus Python back-end frameworks; exposure to desktop application technologies such as Rust, Tauri, or Electron is beneficial.
  • Experience designing role-based and attribute-based access control for confidential engineering or customer data, including audit, compliance, cost, performance, and responsible AI considerations.
  • Experience integrating enterprise platforms such as Teamcenter, SAP, Oracle, Snowflake, SharePoint, or engineering and simulation tools; knowledge of gas turbine design, manufacturing, service, inspection, or engineering workflows is beneficial.
Export Control Requirement:Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
