What Does a Rust Developer Do?

The job duties of a Rust developer focus on performing computer programming tasks using the Rust programming language. As a Rust developer, you focus on coding and development for projects such as web browsers, operating systems, server and systems software, and blockchain projects. Your responsibilities vary depending on the requirements of the development projects on which you work. You typically work to ensure the safety and security of the software or systems that you develop and test and debug them as part of the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Developer, you need strong proficiency in Rust programming, a solid understanding of systems programming concepts, and a relevant degree or experience in software development. Familiarity with tools like Cargo, Git, and continuous integration systems, as well as experience with frameworks such as Actix or Rocket, are commonly required. Outstanding problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top Rust Developers apart. These skills ensure robust, efficient, and safe code, which is essential for building reliable software solutions.

What are some common challenges Rust Developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Developers often encounter challenges such as managing complex dependencies, ensuring memory safety without sacrificing performance, and integrating Rust code with existing systems written in other languages. Collaborating with cross-functional teams can also require clear communication, especially when explaining Rust’s unique concepts to those unfamiliar with the language. Staying up-to-date with the rapidly evolving Rust ecosystem and tooling is important, as new libraries and best practices frequently emerge.

What are Rust Developers?

Rust Developers are software engineers who specialize in using the Rust programming language to build safe, fast, and reliable applications. They write, test, and maintain code, often focusing on system-level programming, web servers, blockchain technologies, and performance-critical software. Rust Developers leverage the language’s unique features, like memory safety and concurrency, to build efficient and secure solutions. Their responsibilities may also include contributing to open-source projects, optimizing existing code, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

What is the difference between Rust Developer vs C++ Developer?

AspectRust Developer
Required CredentialsProficiency in Rust programming, often with a computer science background or coding certifications
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, especially in systems programming, embedded systems, or performance-critical applications
Industry UsageTech companies focusing on safety, concurrency, and performance, including blockchain, embedded systems, and web assembly

Rust Developers and C++ Developers share similar skills in systems programming, requiring knowledge of low-level programming, memory management, and performance optimization. Both roles are common in industries demanding high efficiency and safety. While C++ Developers often have experience with legacy codebases and a broader range of tools, Rust Developers focus on modern safety features and concurrency. The choice between the two depends on project requirements and company preferences.

Job description

Resonant Sciences LLC has an immediate opening for a entry-level Software Developer with a BS or MS in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field to join our Dayton, Ohio team. The position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced elite team whose primary mission is to support our Nation's War Fighters. This person will work alongside senior scientists and engineers to build and maintain software tools, data pipelines, and visualization systems that support the company's infrared science and sensor integration projects. A core part of this role is taking proven Python prototypes and porting them to production-quality C++ or Rust for improved performance, stability, and deployability.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Junior Developer will write and maintain Python code for scientific data processing, analysis, and visualization, and critically, will translate mature Python-based engineering tools into performant C++ or Rust implementations.
  • This includes profiling Python code to identify bottlenecks, designing equivalent implementations in compiled languages that preserve numerical accuracy, and building clean interfaces so that scientists and engineers can continue to interact with the tools without needing to work in C++ or Rust directly.
  • They will also contribute to data pipeline development, hardware interface software, and documentation of reproducible workflows.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong proficiency in Python and demonstrated experience in C++ or Rust (or both).
  • Understanding the practical considerations of porting scientific code:
    • Memory management
    • Numerical precision
    • Dependency handling and build systems
  • Coursework or project experience in at least one of the following is expected:
    • Infrared or electro-optical physics
    • Atmospheric science, signal processing
    • Image processing or computer vision
    • Scientific computing and numerical methods
  • The key requirement is someone who can bridge the gap between rapid prototyping in Python and production-grade compiled code, while having enough physics or engineering intuition to understand the science behind what they are building.
STRONGLY PREFERRED
This is a small team where a new team member will receive direct mentorship from senior technical staff but will also be expected to:
  • Take ownership of work products and deliverables quickly.
  • Must be a self-starter who is comfortable working independently once pointed in the right direction.
  • Should be eager to learn domain-specific science on the job and not be intimidated by unfamiliar physics.
  • Experience with any of the following will stand out:
    • Python/C++ interoperability tools (pybind11, ctypes, CFFI) or Python/Rust bindings (PyO3, maturin), build systems and toolchains (CMake, Cargo), performance profiling and optimization, version control with Git, working with HDF5, NetCDF, or other scientific data formats, and Linux development environments.
NICE TO HAVE
  • Familiarity with GPU programming (CUDA, OpenCL), radiative transfer codes, camera calibration, coordinate transformations, or 3D geometry.
  • Prior internship or project work in a defense, aerospace, or government research setting. Experience with real-time data processing or embedded systems.
CITIZENSHIP/SECURITY CLEARANCE:
  • U.S. Citizenship required. Must be eligible to obtain and/or maintain a Secret security clearance.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
  • Become part of a high-tech work environment that is highly impactful, exciting, and collaborative.
  • Flexible working environment that enables our employees to balance work and personal life.
  • A comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision and prescription benefits with extremely low employee cost share for you and your eligible dependents.
  • A well-funded Health Spending Account with standard account fees paid by Resonant Sciences.
  • 10 Federal Holidays (6 Standard, 4 Floating).
  • A flexible Paid Time Off plan for employees.
  • A generous retirement plan, subject to plan, IRS and ERISA rules.
