We promote a collaborative culture with our clients, and with each other, as one team working towards a common vision. We'd love for you to join our team!
Job Summary
B&A is seeking a detail-oriented Geospatial Data to support a federal government client on an important mission-focused program. The successful candidate will transform existing geospatial data into accurate, visually effective, and mission-ready cartographic products using FME, QGIS, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and professional cartographic principles. This role works with vector, elevation, imagery, and other geospatial datasets to support data integration, analysis, map production, cartographic finishing, quality control, and customer-defined portrayal standards. This position will begin as remote and transition to onsite support based on program and customer requirements.
Responsibilities
โ€ข Transform existing geospatial datasets into accurate, readable, and finished cartographic products in accordance with established product specifications, portrayal standards, and customer requirements.
โ€ข Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot spatial data workflows using FME to transform, validate, automate, and integrate geospatial information from multiple sources.
โ€ข Use QGIS to perform spatial analysis, create maps, manage geospatial layers, and develop visually effective cartographic products for technical and non-technical audiences.
โ€ข Apply cartographic symbolization and portrayal rules to represent geographic features based on feature type, attribution, scale, and intended product use.
โ€ข Perform cartographic generalization, feature displacement, and conflict resolution to maintain geographic relationships while improving map clarity and readability at the intended production scale.
โ€ข Create, edit, and position geographic names, labels, annotation, symbols, and other map elements using established placement techniques to minimize conflicts and ensure legibility.
โ€ข Develop and maintain map layouts and required product elements, including grids, legends, scale information, marginalia, titles, notes, and other components necessary for final product presentation.
โ€ข Manage, query, and validate spatial and tabular data using PostgreSQL and PostGIS, including data loading, data review, and basic database maintenance activities.
โ€ข Perform cartographic finishing and quality control to identify and resolve symbol conflicts, annotation collisions, feature congestion, inconsistent portrayal, and other visual or technical discrepancies.
โ€ข Collaborate with analysts, developers, project managers, and government stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver accurate, timely geospatial and cartographic products.
Education and Experience
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Geospatial Science, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field is required.
โ€ข 2-5 years of professional experience supporting geospatial data analysis, GIS operations, data integration, or related technical work.
Required Skills
โ€ข Hands-on experience with FME for geospatial data transformation, automation, validation, and workflow development.
โ€ข Experience using QGIS to perform spatial analysis, create cartographic products, manage geospatial layers, and support map production.
โ€ข Working knowledge of PostgreSQL; experience with PostGIS is strongly preferred.
โ€ข Experience working with vector, raster, elevation, imagery, and other geospatial datasets.
โ€ข Understanding of professional cartographic principles, map design techniques, symbolization, feature placement, annotation, generalization, and cartographic finishing.
โ€ข Ability to apply visual hierarchy, feature prominence, scale-dependent representation, density, balance, and map composition to communicate geographic information clearly.
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to perform cartographic quality control, data quality review, troubleshooting, and documentation.
โ€ข Familiarity with common geospatial data formats, coordinate systems, metadata standards, portrayal rules, and data management best practices.
โ€ข Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to support both independent and team-based work.
Desired Skills
โ€ข Experience supporting federal government, defense, intelligence, or mission-focused programs.
โ€ข Experience producing finished cartographic products in accordance with customer specifications, portrayal requirements, or established mapping standards.
โ€ข Experience with PostGIS, spatial SQL, geospatial data modeling, or database performance considerations for spatial datasets.
โ€ข Familiarity with geospatial automation, scripting, or repeatable workflow development.
โ€ข Active security clearance is preferred but not required at start.
Security Clearance
โ€ข No active security clearance is required at start; however, an active clearance is preferred.
โ€ข Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance with Lifestyle Polygraph.
โ€ข U.S. citizenship required.
