Job description

Basic Functions Provides advanced interpretation services for senior mission management, particularly the Ambassador, DCM, and VIP visitors at high level meetings with Government of Russia officials. Provides translation services to all other eligible Embassy sections or US government entities, with priority given to the Ambassador and DCM. This will be the senior of two interpreter/translator positions.

Interpretation will be from Russian to English and from English to Russian. Duties include but are not limited to: Interpretation (simultaneous and consecutive): 60% * Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation services to the Ambassador, DCM, VIP visitors from Washington, and for Mission outreach and communication purposes. Interpretation services may be provided to other American staff on as available basis and subject to other priorities.

* Attend and interpret meetings, conferences, round table discussions, presentations, official ceremonies, and accompany during the site visits. This may include attending Russia-related policy meetings held outside of Russia. * Serve as simultaneous and consecutive interpreter between senior mission management, including VIP visitors from Washington, and high-level Russian government officials during lengthy high-level negotiations, without a significant break or repose.

This may require preliminary research as well as knowledge and command of specialized vocabulary. * Provide written summaries, minutes, and/or overviews of the meetings. * Manage interpretation equipment and must be competent in using various forms of interpretation equipment for large events.

Translation: 40% * Translate (on a routine or urgent basis) from English to Russian and vice versa documents requested for the Ambassador, DCM, and all other eligible Embassy sections or US government entities. Documents eligible for translation under Translation Unit Policy include but are not limited to Ambassadorial blog/twitter materials, all other Ambassadorial and DCM support materials (e.g. speeches, correspondence, media articles) diplomatic notes, presidential commission reports and newsletters, contracts, treaties, laws, regulations, specifications for projects, medical reports, as well as medic articles covering political, economic, military scientific, social , cultural, and crime-related issues.

* On an ongoing basis, conduct the necessary research in relevant fields to keep abreast of basic political, economic, social, military, scientific, cultural, and ecological developments in Russia and the United States. * Be prepared and able to serve as duty translator as necessary and as assigned. * Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications * Top Secret Clearance * University degree in translating. Interpreting, linguistics or related field. * Specific training in simultaneous interpretation.

* At least ten years of recent professional experience in translation and interpretation (simultaneous and consecutive) * Speaking and reading at a Level 4/4 (fluent) in English and Russian or Advance Proficiency (above Level 4) are required. * Extensive knowledge of professional translation work for English and Russian. * Good sense of Russian and English style is required.

* Good knowledge of translation technical toolkits, including electronic dictionaries, thesauruses and other translation databases. * Good working knowledge of how to use the Internet. * Basic knowledge of Russian and American political, economic, military, scientific, cultural, and social developments.

* Must be able to translate both routine and non-routine documents of a moderately complex nature from English into Russian and vice versa * Must be able to deal diplomatically and effectively with all levels of contacts, both external and internal. * Must be a U.S. Citizen.
