Runway Lighting information
What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with runway lighting systems at airports?
What is the difference between Runway Lighting vs Taxiway Lighting?
| Aspect | Runway Lighting | Taxiway Lighting |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Illuminates the runway for takeoff and landing | Guides aircraft along taxiways to and from runways |
| Required Certifications | FAA or equivalent aviation lighting certifications | FAA or equivalent certifications for airport lighting |
| Work Environment | Airports, outdoor, high safety standards | Airports, outdoor, safety-critical |
| Industry Usage | Airports, aviation industry | Airports, aviation industry |
Runway Lighting and Taxiway Lighting are both essential airport lighting systems. Runway lighting ensures safe takeoffs and landings, while taxiway lighting guides aircraft safely on the ground. Although they share similar certifications and work environments, their functions are distinct, serving different parts of airport operations.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of medium to high voltage electrical distribution systems and related equipment. This role includes working with cathodic protection systems, power generators (gas and diesel), transformers, and airfield lighting systems.
This role is at NSA Bethesda.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain medium voltage (1kV-35kV) systems and, where applicable, 69kV Navy systems.
- Inspect, repair, and test a wide range of electrical components including underground cable systems, switches (oil, SF6, air), transformers, ground grid systems, and fuses.
- Troubleshoot electrical issues using specialized tools: multimeters, meggers, ammeters, cable locators, fault finders, high-potential test equipment, etc.
- Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical manuals.
- Follow all safety protocols including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), NFPA 70E standards, and PPE requirements. No live (hot) work is permitted without prior written authorization.
- Respond to electrical service calls and emergencies, ensuring systems remain operational.
- Maintain and repair airfield lighting systems, including runway and taxiway lights, beacons, current regulators, optical landing systems, and control systems.

- Proven knowledge of:
- Electrical theory, circuit analysis, and system operations
