What does a running coach do?

A Running Coach helps individuals improve their running technique, endurance, and overall performance. They create personalized training plans, provide motivation, and offer guidance on injury prevention, nutrition, and race strategies. Coaches work with runners of all levels, from beginners to competitive athletes, to help them achieve their goals efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a running coach?

A Running Coach thrives with expertise in exercise physiology, training plan development, and injury prevention, often supported by certifications such as RRCA or USATF. Familiarity with heart rate monitors, GPS tracking systems, and coaching software like TrainingPeaks is advantageous. Outstanding communication, motivation, and empathy make a coach effective in supporting and inspiring athletes. These skills are vital to foster athlete performance, maintain safety, and build trust within the coaching relationship.

What are some common challenges running coaches face, and how can they overcome them?

Running Coaches often encounter challenges such as customizing training plans for athletes with varying goals and fitness levels, addressing injury risks, and maintaining athlete motivation during setbacks. To overcome these, coaches focus on continuous education, clear communication, and adapting programs based on athlete feedback and progress. Building strong relationships and staying updated with the latest sports science allows coaches to effectively support athletes through obstacles. Additionally, learning to balance group dynamics and individual attention is key to the success of group training sessions.

Personal Trainer/Fitness Coach - PTO, Full-Time (Adults 40+, Overland Park)

Job description

Full-time • Paid hourly (~$45,000–$59,000/yrr) • PTO • Overland Park, KS
I can teach someone to be a great coach. I can’t teach someone to care.

So at BridgeFit, I hire for the things you can’t train — heart, energy, and a real love for helping people — and we build the coaching from there. You’ll need to already be certified (more on that below), but past that, I care more about who you are than your résumé.

If you light up when someone hits a goal they didn’t believe they could reach — keep reading.

A little about us

We’re a personal training gym for adults 40+ here in Overland Park. Small groups and 1-on-1. We’ve been voted Best Personal Training in Johnson County four years running, with 100+ five-star reviews and Best Gym 2026. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because our coaches genuinely care — and because we invest in them so they keep getting better.

We’re not the loud gym. No screaming, no ego, no drill-sergeant act. We coach with detail and precision, and we meet people where they’re at. Think “the Cheers of fitness” — a place where everybody knows your name. That goes for our team, too.

Right now, I’m hiring.

Why coach at BridgeFit (and not the big-box gym down the road)
  • No sales. Your only job is to be a great coach. No packages to push, no commission pressure.
  • No doubles. Consistent, set shifts you can build a real life around. No chaos, no last-minute changes.
  • We actually develop you. Structured onboarding, a proven coaching system so you’re never winging it, $500/year toward continuing education, and expert speakers we bring in. You will get better here.
  • Real room to grow. Our Director of Training started as an intern — we build people up. As we grow, so can you.
  • A team that means it. No egos. We’re in each other’s corner.
  • PTO, because we invest in coaches who are here for the long haul.
Who I’m looking for

Maybe you’re newer and hungry, with more heart than years. Maybe you’re a good coach who’s burned out on the franchise grind — the doubles, the sales quotas, being just a number. Maybe you’ve always been the person others lean on. If any of that is you, we should talk.

The right person:

  • Is a genuinely good human who puts people first
  • Brings real energy — whether or not you feel like it that day
  • Connects with a 60-year-old like they’re an old friend
  • Loves helping people, especially the ones who’ve been counted out
  • Is certified (NASM, ACE, ISSA, or similar) and CPR/AED certified — this one’s required
  • Bonus: experience with adults 40+ or small-group training

One honest filter: if you’re here to build your personal brand and need the spotlight, this isn’t the place. We’re a team, and it’s about the members — not us.

How to apply

Hit Apply and send your résumé. I read every one personally.
