Job description

Overview

Accountability: Lead the development, startup, and profitable growth of railroad transloading operations across R. J. Corman’s short line railroads. This position is accountable for identifying and pursuing standalone transload opportunities, establishing safe and efficient site operations, coordinating rail-to-truck and other multimodal transportation solutions, supporting customer supply chain needs, ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable regulations, developing qualified personnel, and maintaining accurate budgeting, cost control, and operational reporting.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, launch, and scale transload operations across R. J. Corman divisions, including site assessments, startup planning, staffing, equipment needs, customer coordination, and operating procedures.
  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue standalone transload opportunities that create profitable growth and expand the company’s rail-served logistics capabilities.
  • Partner with commercial, operations, engineering, mechanical, safety, and finance teams to determine the feasibility, cost structure, pricing assumptions, and operational requirements for new transload sites and customer opportunities.
  • Apply a strong understanding of supply chain strategy and transportation modes, including rail, truck, warehouse, and customer delivery requirements, to design practical and competitive transload solutions.
  • Oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant transfer of bulk, packaged, or other customer commodities between railcars, trucks, storage areas, and other approved modes or equipment.
  • Establish operating standards, site workflows, inventory controls, service metrics, and communication practices that support reliable customer service and operational consistency.
  • Build and sustain a strong safety culture with a foundation focused on rules compliance, risk identification, employee training, and safe work practices around railcars, trucks, equipment, and customer facilities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers, prospects, trucking partners, vendors, property owners, and internal stakeholders to support new business development and long-term service success.
  • Support customer meetings, site visits, and proposal discussions by providing operational expertise, startup timelines, resource requirements, and performance expectations.
  • Manage budgets, cost controls, revenue projections, productivity measures, and financial reporting for transload operations and new-site startup activity.
  • Monitor operational performance, including dwell, throughput, cycle time, inventory accuracy, equipment utilization, labor efficiency, service reliability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain qualified transload personnel and site leaders capable of supporting safe, efficient, and customer-focused operations.
  • Ensure contracts, service requirements, access agreements, safety expectations, and customer commitments are understood, communicated, and executed at the site level.
  • Guide continuous improvement efforts to improve safety, efficiency, customer experience, asset utilization, and profitability across transload operations.
Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, supply chain management, logistics, transportation, operations management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in railroad operations, transloading, logistics, transportation, supply chain, terminal operations, or a related industrial operating environment.
  • Demonstrated experience starting up new operational sites, services, or customer locations, including planning, staffing, equipment coordination, safety preparation, and process implementation.
  • Strong understanding of multimodal transportation and supply chain requirements, including rail, truck, customer delivery schedules, inventory movement, and service reliability.
  • Experience identifying, evaluating, and developing new business opportunities, customer solutions, or operational growth initiatives preferred.
  • Knowledge of transload commodities, material handling equipment, railcar loading/unloading practices, truck coordination, inventory controls, and site safety requirements preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience leading teams, managing supervisors, or overseeing multi-site operations preferred.
  • Strong financial, analytical, communication, customer relationship, and problem-solving skills required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk, stand, climb, bend, and move safely around railcars, trucks, loading areas, customer facilities, and uneven outdoor surfaces during site visits and operational reviews.
  • Limited lifting, generally no greater than 20 pounds, in the movement of office materials, tools, or equipment.
  • Hand and finger dexterity for use of computers, mobile devices, and other business equipment.
Environmental Conditions

Performs duties in office, field, customer, and outdoor environments, including active transload sites, rail yards, industrial facilities, and areas around moving locomotives, railcars, trucks, vehicles, and material-handling equipment. Position requires travel to evaluate, start up, and support transload operations across assigned locations and may involve exposure to weather elements. Must wear appropriate PPE required for site visits.
