What is a Ruby on Rails Healthcare Developer?

A Ruby on Rails Healthcare Developer is a software professional who specializes in building and maintaining healthcare applications using the Ruby on Rails web framework. These developers create secure, scalable, and user-friendly software solutions tailored for healthcare organizations, such as electronic health record (EHR) systems, patient portals, and telemedicine platforms. They must also ensure compliance with healthcare regulations like HIPAA and integrate with various medical data systems. Their work helps improve healthcare delivery by streamlining processes and enhancing patient care.

How does working as a Ruby on Rails developer in the healthcare sector differ from other industries?

As a Ruby on Rails developer in healthcare, you’ll be tasked with building and maintaining applications that handle sensitive patient data and must comply with strict regulations like HIPAA. This means you’ll focus heavily on security, data integrity, and privacy, often collaborating with compliance officers and healthcare professionals to ensure software meets regulatory standards. The work environment is typically cross-functional, working closely with product managers and clinicians to understand unique healthcare workflows. You'll also need to adapt quickly to evolving healthcare regulations and integrate with specialized medical systems, which can be both challenging and rewarding.

While both roles require programming skills and healthcare knowledge, Ruby On Rails Healthcare focuses on web-based solutions within healthcare organizations, whereas Medical Software Developers work on broader medical software products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails developer in the healthcare industry, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby on Rails developer in healthcare, you need strong programming skills in Ruby, a deep understanding of the Rails framework, and familiarity with healthcare regulations like HIPAA, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with technical tools such as PostgreSQL, RESTful APIs, Git, and healthcare-specific systems like EHR integration is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with clinicians and translating complex requirements. These skills and qualities are crucial for building secure, compliant, and user-friendly healthcare applications that support critical patient care workflows.

Job description

Position Overview
You'll be working as a senior software developer on our core product and reporting directly to the CTO. OpsLevel integrates with various operational tools and we've got a meaty roadmap ahead of us and new integrations / platform capabilities to build. Here are some sample technologies you could be integrating our product with:
  • Container orchestrators like Kubernetes and Consul
  • Services meshes like Istio / Envoy
  • Metrics tools like DataDog, Grafana, and Prometheus.

Your day to day will be writing software, but you'll ultimately touch various aspects of the business: talking to customers, defining new features, and then actually implementing those features end to end. We work in an agile way with minimal process / structure, so you should be good at working independently and getting stuff done.
  • Founded 2018
  • Funding: $5M
  • Seed Company
  • Will transfer H1
  • Salary: $150k - $160k
  • Skills: Ruby on rails, Vue, MySQL
About You
You have a track record of making good engineering decisions. You improve those around you. You care about code quality and maintainability, but know when to tradeoff technical debt vs. building for the long term.
Here are some of the technologies we use:
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Vue.js
  • MySQL
  • Redis
  • GraphQL
  • ElasticSearch
  • Terraform
  • AWS / GCP
  • Git

It's not a requirement that you've used them before, but you should be comfortable with getting up to speed quickly.
