What is a Ruby developer?

Ruby Developers are software engineers who specialize in building applications using the Ruby programming language. They often work with frameworks like Ruby on Rails to develop web applications, APIs, and backend services. Their responsibilities include writing clean code, debugging, testing, and maintaining existing software. Ruby Developers collaborate with other team members such as designers and project managers to deliver robust, scalable solutions. They may also be involved in database management and integrating third-party services.

What does a Ruby developer do?

Ruby on Rails is a server-side web application framework, which is a software framework used to develop web applications and APIs. A Ruby developer is a backend software developer, which means they create the databases, libraries, and logic that make up an application. In this career, you use Ruby on Rails, along with other programming frameworks and languages, to make the applications scalable. Your duties are to script new applications or maintain and improve existing ones. Your responsibilities on a given project require you to work closely with frontend development teams to ensure that the visual interface features of the application work in tandem with your code.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Ruby developer?

To thrive as a Ruby Developer, you need strong proficiency in Ruby programming, object-oriented design, and a solid understanding of web development principles, often backed by a relevant degree or coding experience. Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, version control systems like Git, and testing tools such as RSpec is typically required. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills that help developers excel in collaborative and dynamic environments. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust, scalable applications and ensuring smooth project delivery.

How do Ruby developers typically collaborate with front-end teams during project development?

Ruby Developers often work closely with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration between server-side logic and user-facing features. This collaboration involves regular communication to align on API endpoints, data structures, and user experience requirements. Developers may participate in sprint planning sessions, code reviews, and joint troubleshooting meetings to address any integration challenges promptly. Effective teamwork helps deliver cohesive, high-quality applications and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

Job description

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

Kansas City, Missouri | Remote-First

 Full-Time | Base Salary: $90,000 - $100,000

About backstitch

backstitch is a venture-backed HR technology company changing the way organizations communicate with their employees. Our software and strategic services help leading organizations, including Fortune 100 companies, create more connected, informed, and engaged workforces.

We're a small, collaborative company where developers have the opportunity to own meaningful work, influence technical decisions, work directly with company and technology leadership, and see the impact of what they build.

The Role

We're looking for a Software Developer with at least two years of full-time professional software development experience to join our Product team. You'll help develop, enhance, and scale the applications and services that power the backstitch platform. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll contribute throughout the development lifecycle, from technical scoping and architecture through implementation, testing, code review, deployment, and ongoing improvement.

We're specifically looking for someone with a strong software engineering and computer science foundation who has experience working on real production applications as part of a professional development team.

AI-assisted development is also an established part of how our engineering team works. Our developers use tools such as Codex and Claude Code to support ongoing development, code reviews, architecture exploration, debugging, and UI design. We're looking for someone who has already incorporated AI development tools into their workflow and understands how to critically evaluate and validate the solutions they produce.

How We Work

This is a remote-first position for candidates based in either Kansas or Missouri. You'll work from home and collaborate with the development team remotely throughout each sprint.

At the beginning of each quarter, our entire company comes together in Kansas City for approximately two days of company meetings, planning, and a team activity. backstitch pays for required travel and lodging for employees outside the Kansas City area to attend these quarterly company meetings.

New employees should also expect to spend approximately two days onsite in Kansas City as part of onboarding. backstitch will pay for required travel and lodging associated with onboarding.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Design, develop, test, and ship features across our web and mobile applications.
  • Build and maintain backend services, APIs, integrations, and customer-facing functionality.
  • Work within an established production codebase and contribute improvements to its architecture, maintainability, performance, and scalability.
  • Own development work from technical scoping through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
  • Participate actively in peer code reviews and technical discussions.
  • Use AI development tools such as Codex and Claude Code to accelerate development, investigate code, explore architecture, support code reviews, and prototype solutions.
  • Critically evaluate AI-generated code and recommendations for correctness, maintainability, security, and architectural fit.
  • Collaborate with Product, Customer Success, and other team members to translate customer and business needs into technical solutions.
  • Participate in our Agile development process, including sprint planning and sprint kickoff meetings.
  • Help continuously improve our engineering processes, tools, and technical foundation.

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 2+ years of full-time professional software development experience working as part of an engineering or product development team and contributing to production software used by customers or end users. Internships, coursework, coding bootcamps, and personal projects can provide valuable experience, but alone do not satisfy the 2+ years of full-time professional software development experience required for this position.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field preferred, or equivalent depth of computer science knowledge demonstrated through substantial professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including software design, data structures, algorithms, application architecture, databases, APIs, and object-oriented development.
  • Professional experience building and maintaining modern production web applications.
  • Experience with backend development using languages such as Ruby or Python.
  • Experience with modern JavaScript or TypeScript development and frameworks such as React or Next.js.
  • Experience working with relational databases, Git-based development workflows, automated testing, and peer code review.
  • Ability to understand an established codebase, independently investigate technical problems, and develop maintainable solutions.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Codex, Claude Code, or comparable tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, written communication, and collaboration skills.

Helpful Experience

Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required:

  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • Elasticsearch
  • AWS or other cloud infrastructure
  • CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment
  • Mobile application development
  • Microservices and distributed application architecture

  • Generous company stock options
  • 9 paid company holidays per calendar year
  • 60 hours of paid sick time per 12-month period
  • Uncapped planned paid time off, subject to manager approval
  • Paid parental leave
