What Does a Rubber Chemist Do?
As a rubber chemist, you develop a rubber compound that meets specific design applications requests from manufacturers. The particular needs of the manufacturer dictate what materials are used in the mix to create the desired hardness, strength, resistance, and elongation. As part of your duties, you must ensure the compound is at a low cost while still meeting the needs of the manufacturer. Your responsibilities include managing proper mix time, temperature, and weight. You must also follow the compound throughout the mixing process to ensure accurate results.
What is the difference between Rubber Chemist vs Polymer Scientist?
| Aspect | Rubber Chemist | Polymer Scientist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science | Bachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Polymer Science |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, manufacturing plants, R&D facilities | Research labs, industrial settings, academia |
| Industry Usage | Rubber manufacturing, tire production, elastomers | Broad polymer applications including plastics, fibers, elastomers |
| Common Search/Comparison | Yes | Yes |
Rubber Chemists focus specifically on the development and testing of rubber compounds used in tires, seals, and elastomers. Polymer Scientists have a broader scope, working with various polymers beyond rubber, including plastics and fibers. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often work in overlapping environments, but Rubber Chemists specialize in rubber materials, while Polymer Scientists explore a wider range of polymer applications.
