RPG Developers are often responsible for designing, coding, testing, and maintaining applications on the IBM iSeries/AS400 platform. Typical tasks include modifying legacy RPG programs, troubleshooting system errors, updating existing code to meet new business requirements, and integrating software with other enterprise systems. They may also work closely with business analysts, end-users, and IT support teams to gather requirements and ensure solutions align with organizational needs. Regular documentation, data analysis, and participation in project meetings are common aspects of the role. Collaboration with other developers and cross-functional teams is frequent, making strong communication skills highly valuable.

What is an RPG?

An RPG job typically refers to a role involving the development and maintenance of applications using the IBM RPG programming language, primarily for IBM i (AS/400) systems. RPG developers are responsible for writing, debugging, and optimizing code to support business applications. They often work with databases, CL programs, and modern technologies to integrate with legacy systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the RPG position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RPG (Report Program Generator) Developer, you need a strong background in programming with RPG languages (especially RPG IV or RPGLE), experience with IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, and a good understanding of database management. Familiarity with tools such as IBM i Navigator, CL programming, SQL, and change management software is important, and some roles may require certifications in IBM system management. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help RPG Developers to deliver effective business solutions. These skills are crucial to ensure that legacy systems run efficiently and integrate smoothly with modern business processes.
