Job description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one-hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.

The Content Automation Specialist is responsible for automating production, indexing, and validation processes to improve efficiency and accuracy, including through the use of rule-based client software and generative AI technology. The Content Automation Specialist explores the functionality and viability of automated solutions for content production, primarily for the creation and enhancement of indexing and metadata records. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work on multiple projects, including the maintenance of established solutions alongside the exploration and development of new solutions. The successful candidate must have experience with rule-based process automation and/or generative AI technologies. Experience with analyzing  outputs and demonstrating the ability to achieve iterative improvements on them is highly desired.

Education and Experience:    

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in psychology (strongly preferred) or closely related social science or library science and 5+ years’ experience working with database production, taxonomy/ontology, or other controlled indexing data
  • Demonstrated experience with rule-based and/or generative AI-based technologies in indexing and process automation is required
  • Knowledge of PsycInfo indexing rules and the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms is strongly preferred. Extensive experience in indexing in psychology or closely related social science or back-of-the-book indexing (psychology preferred) may be considered
  • Demonstrated experience with information retrieval systems and practices is highly desired, including, for example, constructing Boolean search strategies or using Boolean logical operators, regular expressions, or NLP approaches

  • Reviews and fine-tunes a rule-based, text-derived automated indexing system to identify and match words or phrases from the psychological literature within programmatic rules to accurately assign index terms from the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms to bibliographic records for articles, books, chapters, and tests records.
  • In collaboration with management staff, participates in the analysis of automated indexing data, whether derived by rules or other technology; based on feedback from subject matter experts, statistics ,or reports, suggests and/or makes changes to facilitate continued and increased accuracy to feed into decisions related to metadata production; and gathers data to support overall analyses of automated indexing operations by the Manager, Content Automation
  • Contributes to the development, documentation, and implementation of indexing, classification, and checktag guidelines and standards in Content Management
  • Works closely with the Taxonomist in the development and enhancement of existing thesaurus terms.
  • Participates in exploratory projects investigating potential automated solutions
  • Engineers prompts, tests, and iterates across multiple LLMs
  • Analyzes outputs for viability
  • Participates in ongoing QA and improvement of automated solutions
  • Other duties as assigned
