What is the difference between Routing Switching vs Network Technician?

AspectRouting SwitchingNetwork Technician
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA
Work EnvironmentDesign, configure, and troubleshoot network infrastructureInstall, maintain, and support network hardware and software
Industry UsageTelecommunications, enterprise networksIT support, network maintenance

Routing Switching professionals focus on configuring and managing network devices like routers and switches, ensuring efficient data flow. Network Technicians handle broader network support tasks, including hardware setup and troubleshooting. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Routing Switching specialists are more involved in network design and optimization, whereas Network Technicians provide essential operational support.

What is network routing and switching?

Network routing and switching are fundamental functions performed by networking professionals, including those in routing and switching roles. Routing involves directing data packets between different networks using devices like routers, while switching connects devices within the same network through switches. These skills are essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining network infrastructure, often requiring knowledge of protocols, network topology, and certifications such as Cisco CCNA.

Job description

Position Summary

Stimulus Technologies is seeking a Network Administrator to operate, maintain, and expand our Internet service provider network in Nevada and throughout our multi-state service area.

This is a hands-on technical position supporting fiber, fixed-wireless, carrier transport, tower, and core routing infrastructure. The Network Administrator will configure network equipment, monitor performance, investigate outages, support field technicians, maintain accurate documentation, and implement projects designed by the Network Infrastructure Architect.

The position is based in Las Vegas and includes a combination of office work, remote network administration, field visits, and travel. This is not a traditional corporate IT or end-user support position; it is focused specifically on operating ISP infrastructure.

What Success Looks Like

  • Monitor network availability, capacity, latency, packet loss, and overall performance.
  • Configure and maintain routers, switches, wireless equipment, access platforms, transport systems, and related infrastructure.
  • Implement network designs and technical standards established by the Network Infrastructure Architect.
  • Diagnose and resolve network outages with urgency and accuracy.
  • Provide Tier II and Tier III escalation support for customer-impacting network problems.
  • Determine and document the root causes of outages and recurring performance issues.
  • Support the deployment and activation of new fiber, fixed-wireless, transport, and customer-access infrastructure.
  • Assist field technicians with troubleshooting, equipment replacement, turn-up, and testing.
  • Maintain network diagrams, equipment records, IP-address assignments, configurations, circuits, and site documentation.
  • Perform capacity reviews and identify equipment, circuits, or network segments requiring upgrades.
  • Follow change-management, maintenance-window, security, and documentation procedures.
  • Work with carriers and vendors to resolve circuit, equipment, and service problems.
  • Validate backups of network configurations and assist with equipment recovery.
  • Participate in planned maintenance and an after-hours on-call rotation.
  • Travel to network sites when remote troubleshooting cannot resolve an issue.

Required Skills and Experience

  • At least three years of professional networking experience.
  • Experience supporting an ISP, telecommunications carrier, wireless ISP, data center, or similarly complex production network.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, subnetting, VLANs, routing, switching, DHCP, DNS, NAT, VPNs, and network security.
  • Experience with advanced routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF.
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot routers, switches, wireless equipment, and network-management platforms.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work methodically during high-pressure, customer-impacting incidents.
  • Strong written documentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, accountability, and professional judgment.
  • Availability for planned after-hours work, on-call support, and emergency outages.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to network locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Juniper, Nokia, Cisco, MikroTik, Ubiquiti, Cambium, Calix, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting fixed-wireless, fiber, GPON/XGS-PON, carrier transport, or tower networks.
  • Familiarity with network-monitoring, configuration-management, mapping, and IP-address-management systems.
  • CompTIA Network+, Juniper, Cisco, or comparable certifications.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in information technology, networking, telecommunications, or a related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.

Physical and Travel Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and safely work on rooftops and at telecommunications sites.
  • Comfort working around towers, equipment shelters, construction sites, and outside-plant infrastructure.
  • Willingness to travel within Nevada and periodically to other Stimulus Technologies markets.
