Job description

Reporting to the Visitor Services Manager, Gallery attendants provide visitors to the Rose Art Museum an engaging cultural experience while also ensuring the protection of the art on exhibition. The Rose Art Museum seeks to provide an engaging cultural experience for visitors, and Gallery Attendants, as the museum's ambassadors, stand at the forefront of providing that experience. Gallery Attendants are responsible for representing the Rose with warmth and professionalism; welcoming and tracking visitors; providing visitors information on exhibitions and programs; protecting the works of art on view; securing the building; and ensuring the safety of staff and public by strictly following security protocols. Other duties as assigned.

The salary range for the position is $22-$23.50 per hour.

Reporting to the Visitor Services Manager, Gallery attendants provide visitors to the Rose Art Museum an engaging cultural experience while also ensuring the protection of the art on exhibition. The Rose Art Museum seeks to provide an engaging cultural experience for visitors, and Gallery Attendants, as the museum's ambassadors, stand at the forefront of providing that experience. Gallery Attendants are responsible for representing the Rose with warmth and professionalism; welcoming and tracking visitors; providing visitors with information on exhibitions and programs; protecting the works of art on view; securing the building; and ensuring the safety of staff and public by strictly following security protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide excellent customer service and maintain a courteous, friendly and informative attitude while looking after the welfare of the museum galleries. Actively participate in training programs to improve knowledge of the museum, security and customer service skills. Maintain order in assigned areas by addressing inappropriate behavior in a confident, calm, and friendly manner. Serve as initial responder in the event of a visitor or other related emergency, contacting a supervisor when appropriate. Provide friendly, quality information and orientation to students and other visitors during hours of operation and special events. Shifts include rotation to several galleries as well as staffing the welcome desk, including greeting visitors in person, checking them in on an iPad, and answering phone calls. 50%

Follow security routines in opening and closing the building to include turning the lights on and off, as well as assist in exhibition activation and deactivation. Complete a daily written activity log. Assist in conducting crowd control procedures by monitoring and protecting museum visitors, galleries, buildings, equipment, facilities, and grounds. Report to supervisor any missing or damaged objects or unusual conditions. Report any irregularities as they pertain to building operations, safety, or fire hazards during patrol of premises. 45%

Other related functions assigned by the VSM. 5%

This position has a Friday through Sunday schedule from 10:45am to 5:15pm and is part-time with benefits.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree preferred

  • 1-3 years of total work-related experience

What you need to succeed:

  • Outgoing, friendly and customer service-oriented

  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when interacting with visitors, when resolving issues, and enforcing museum policies

  • Exhibit confidence when communicating museum policies and information to visitors

  • Become knowledgeable about the artists and exhibition on view

  • Ability to stand/walk and remain alert for duration of shift

  • Excellent attendance and be available to work a consistent schedule

  • Adapt in diverse situations under pressure and able to take direction

  • Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment at all times

  • Maintain professional appearance and demeanor

  • Training is required and will be provided

  • Ability to work with constituents and students from a variety of backgrounds

  • Familiarity and sensitivity to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
