About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer 3 to join Caterpillar's Automation & Autonomy Engineering team in Mossville, Illinois. This role focuses on developing and integrating advanced technologies for heavy-duty equipment and autonomous machine applications.

The ideal candidate will have experience in systems engineering, requirements development, hardware/software integration, embedded control systems, and sensor technologies. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver robust automation solutions from concept through validation.


Key Responsibilities
  • Translate customer and business requirements into system-level requirements.
  • Decompose high-level automation and autonomy features into detailed functional requirements.
  • Develop and maintain system requirements with complete traceability.
  • Define system architecture, subsystem interfaces, and integration strategies.
  • Collaborate with software, controls, validation, machine systems, and digital engineering teams.
  • Integrate hardware, embedded software, sensors, computing platforms, and control systems.
  • Perform system integration activities and support feature development.
  • Develop and maintain FMEA documentation.
  • Troubleshoot complex system integration issues and perform root cause analysis.
  • Track project schedules, technical risks, and engineering deliverables.
  • Support system validation and testing in office and proving ground environments.
  • Present technical designs, concepts, and engineering results during design reviews.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering development experience (3+ years with a Master's degree).
  • Experience in systems engineering and product development.
  • Strong experience developing, managing, and tracking engineering requirements.
  • Experience integrating sensors, computing platforms, embedded hardware, and software.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycle (SDLC) and engineering processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret component drawings and wiring harness prints.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
