Job Title: Ropes Course Operator


Position Summary

Ropes Course Operators are responsible for the safe operation and supervision of the ropes course attraction in a Family Entertainment Center (FEC). This role involves harnessing participants, monitoring activity at significant heights, enforcing safety procedures, and providing encouragement and guidance to guests of all ages. Ropes Course Operators must maintain constant vigilance, demonstrate strong safety awareness, and ensure a positive, confidence-building experience for every participant.


Key Responsibilities

Course Operations & Safety

  • Operate the ropes course in compliance with all manufacturer guidelines, company policies, and safety standards.
  • Conduct pre-opening, ongoing, and post-closing inspections of harnesses, carabiners, belay systems, safety lines, platforms, and course elements.
  • Properly fit, adjust, and double-check harnesses and safety equipment for each participant prior to course entry.
  • Load and unload participants safely at designated entry and exit points.
  • Verify participant eligibility including age, height, weight, and health requirements.
  • Monitor participants continuously while on the course, ensuring proper clipping techniques and safe behavior.
  • Intervene immediately if unsafe actions are observed, following established rescue and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain a secure and controlled environment in all ropes course areas.

Guest Experience & Instruction

  • Greet guests professionally and explain course rules, safety procedures, and expectations clearly.
  • Provide demonstrations and verbal coaching on correct use of safety systems and course navigation.
  • Encourage and support participants, helping build confidence while maintaining safety compliance.
  • Assist nervous or hesitant guests in a calm, reassuring manner.
  • Respond to guest questions, concerns, or discomfort promptly and professionally.

Monitoring, Rescue & Emergency Response

  • Remain alert and attentive at all times during course operation.
  • Perform assisted descents, course evacuations, or rescues as trained and required.
  • Communicate effectively with fellow operators, supervisors, and management during normal operations and emergencies.
  • Follow all emergency action plans, incident reporting procedures, and safety protocols.

Facility & Team Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of harness storage areas, platforms, and surrounding spaces.
  • Report equipment wear, damage, or operational concerns immediately.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and shift transitions.
  • Uphold company standards related to professionalism, appearance, and guest interaction.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must be at least 17 years of age to operate the ropes course
  • Must successfully pass a written and practical safety certification test
  • Comfortable working at heights of 154 feet or more for extended periods of time
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and professional in high-risk environments
  • Clear communication skills and ability to give firm, respectful instructions
  • Previous ropes course, climbing, zip line, or adventure park experience preferred but not required

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and remain active for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, carry, or assist up to 75 lbs as needed
  • Comfortable wearing safety gear and PPE for long durations
  • Comfortable working indoors or outdoors (as applicable), in varying conditions
  • Ability to maintain focus in a high-energy, family-oriented environment

Training & Certification

  • Paid training provided
  • Ongoing safety training and re-certification required
  • Must demonstrate competency in rescue procedures and guest supervision
