Work EnvironmentFactories, manufacturing plants, warehousesManufacturing facilities, maintenance workshops, industrial settings
Job RoleDesign, programming, and maintenance of robotic systemsInstallation, troubleshooting, and repair of automated equipment and systems

Robots are physical machines used in automation processes, while Automation Technicians are skilled workers who install, maintain, and repair these systems. Robots are the tools, and technicians are the professionals ensuring their proper operation in industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics engineers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Robotics engineers often collaborate closely with professionals from diverse fields such as mechanical engineering, software development, and electronics. One common challenge is ensuring effective communication across specialties, as team members may use different technical languages and approaches. Balancing competing priorities—like hardware constraints versus software requirements—can also be complex. Successful robotics engineers are proactive about seeking clarification, sharing updates, and working collaboratively toward integrated solutions, which helps keep projects on track and fosters innovation.

Is robotics a high paying job?

Robotics jobs, such as robotics engineers or technicians, tend to offer salaries above the national average due to the specialized skills required in areas like programming, mechanical design, and automation. Salaries can vary based on experience, education, location, and industry, with experienced professionals often earning high compensation. Certifications and proficiency with tools like CAD or ROS can also influence earning potential.

What are robots?

Robots are programmable machines capable of carrying out a series of actions automatically, often designed to perform tasks that are repetitive, dangerous, or require precision. They can be autonomous or remotely controlled and are used in various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Modern robots often utilize artificial intelligence to interact with their environment and learn from experience. Their applications continue to expand as technology advances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant degree in engineering or robotics. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python, C++, or ROS), CAD software, and robotics simulation tools is crucial, along with certifications like Certified Robotics Programmer. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and strong communication skills are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are important to design, build, and maintain complex robotic systems that meet industry needs and ensure safe, efficient operation.

What career works with robots?

Careers that work with robots include robotics engineers, robotic technicians, automation specialists, and mechatronics engineers. These roles involve designing, building, programming, and maintaining robotic systems, often requiring knowledge of programming languages, mechanical systems, and control systems. Professionals in this field typically work in manufacturing, research labs, or technology companies and may need relevant degrees or certifications in engineering or robotics.

What kind of jobs can robots do?

Robots can perform a variety of jobs including manufacturing, assembly, packaging, and material handling in factories. They are also used in logistics, healthcare for surgery assistance, and in hazardous environments for tasks unsafe for humans, often requiring programming skills and technical maintenance knowledge.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

Robotics engineers, healthcare professionals, and skilled tradespeople are likely to continue thriving as AI automates routine tasks but requires human oversight, specialized knowledge, and complex problem-solving skills. These roles involve creativity, empathy, or physical dexterity that AI cannot easily replicate. Continuous learning and certification in relevant tools or techniques can enhance job security in these fields.

Job description

Job Title: Robotics Engineer
Job Description

The Robotics Engineer provides advanced robotic programming and technical expertise to deliver high‑quality system integration, startup support, and customer training on time and within budget. In this role, you play a key part throughout the entire project lifecycle, working both on‑site and off‑site to ensure automation systems operate reliably and efficiently. You use your technical judgment and independent decision‑making to keep projects progressing smoothly, while collaborating closely with the project manager and taking hands‑on ownership of critical tasks that drive successful automation solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, configure, and optimize robotic programs, with a focus on FANUC robots, to meet project requirements and performance targets.
  • Support full system integration of robotic solutions, ensuring seamless interaction between robots, controllers, and related automation equipment.
  • Provide on‑site and off‑site startup support, including commissioning, testing, and validation of robotic systems in fabrication shops and manufacturing plants.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues in robotic systems through systematic mechanical troubleshooting and adjustment.
  • Identify and correct electrical issues in robotic and automation systems using electrical troubleshooting techniques.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to evaluate system performance and recommend improvements that enhance reliability and efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers and other team members to plan, coordinate, and execute project tasks on schedule and within scope.
  • Deliver clear, effective customer training on robot operation, programming, maintenance, and safety to ensure end users can operate systems confidently.
  • Document programming changes, troubleshooting steps, and system configurations to maintain accurate and up‑to‑date technical records.
  • Use independent technical judgment to make timely decisions that keep projects moving forward and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to customers, addressing issues and questions related to robotic programming, operation, and system performance.
  • Adhere to safety procedures and best practices while working around moving mechanical parts and electrical systems in industrial environments.
Essential Skills
  • Robotics experience with a strong focus on robot programming, particularly in industrial automation environments.
  • Hands‑on FANUC robot programming experience, including setup, configuration, and optimization of FANUC robotic systems.
  • Proficiency in robot programming concepts such as motion paths, I/O configuration, and integration with other automation equipment.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting skills to identify, diagnose, and resolve mechanical issues in robotic systems and related equipment.
  • Electrical troubleshooting skills to safely diagnose and correct electrical faults in robots, controllers, and associated systems.
  • Strong engineering foundation to apply analytical thinking and technical judgment to complex automation challenges.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed technical decisions to keep projects on track.
  • Effective collaboration skills to work closely with project managers and cross‑functional teams.
  • Clear communication skills to explain technical concepts and provide customer training in an understandable way.
  • Associate’s degree in robotic technology with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or equivalent practical background.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with industrial robots beyond FANUC is beneficial.
  • Exposure to system integration projects in fabrication shops or manufacturing plants.
  • Familiarity with both mechanical and electrical aspects of automated systems.
  • Comfort delivering customer training and technical support in a professional setting.
  • Ability to travel to customer manufacturing plants as project needs require.
Work Environment

This role is primarily based in a fabrication shop and requires regular travel to manufacturing plants for hands‑on work and oversight of robotic systems. You frequently work around moving mechanical parts and potential electrical hazards, so adherence to safety procedures is essential. The noise level is typically loud and consistent with industrial manufacturing environments. The position involves practical, on‑the‑floor engagement with robots, automation equipment, and production processes, requiring comfort in a dynamic, industrial setting.
