What is a robotics tester?

Robotics Testers are professionals who evaluate and ensure the functionality, reliability, and safety of robotic systems before they are deployed for use. They design and execute tests to identify bugs, performance issues, and potential hazards in both hardware and software components of robots. Robotics Testers work closely with engineers and developers to troubleshoot problems and verify that robots meet required standards and specifications. Their role is crucial in making sure that robots operate as intended in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Tester, you need a solid background in robotics engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and experience with automated testing methodologies, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with hardware-software integration tools, test automation frameworks, and simulation environments like ROS (Robot Operating System) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure that robotic systems are thoroughly validated, reliable, and safe for deployment in real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics testers when validating new robotic systems?

Robotics Testers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex hardware-software interactions, replicating intermittent bugs, and ensuring safety compliance during testing. Since robotic systems integrate sensors, actuators, and AI algorithms, testers must develop robust test plans to simulate real-world scenarios and edge cases. Collaboration with engineers and developers is crucial to quickly identify root causes and refine system performance, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Robotics Tester vs Robotics Engineer?

AspectRobotics TesterRobotics Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical engineering, or computer science; certifications in testing or automation are a plusRequires a degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical engineering, or computer science; often holds advanced certifications or specializations
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in labs or testing facilities, focusing on testing robotic systems and softwareDesigning, developing, and implementing robotic systems, often in R&D or manufacturing settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by testing labs, manufacturing companies, and R&D departments to ensure robotic systems meet quality standardsEmployed by tech companies, manufacturing firms, and research institutions to create and improve robotic solutions

Robotics Testers focus on evaluating robotic systems for quality and functionality, while Robotics Engineers are involved in designing and developing these systems. Both roles require technical skills and knowledge of robotics, but their responsibilities differ significantly.

Is it hard to get a job in robotics?

Getting a job as a robotics tester can be competitive and typically requires a background in engineering, programming, or related technical skills. Relevant experience with automation tools, robotics systems, and certifications can improve job prospects, but entry-level positions may be available for those with strong technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Job description

We are looking for mechanically inclined builders who want substantial responsibility early in their careers.

You will help prototype and develop robotic hardware, create mechanical designs in CAD, assemble and modify systems, conduct testing, and solve the failures that inevitably appear when a design meets the real world.

The ideal candidate may have studied mechanical engineering, but a degree is not required. We care much more about what you have built, what you understand, how quickly you learn, and how you behave when the answer is not obvious.

People with experience in FIRST Robotics Competition (tell us what team), Formula SAE, BattleBots, university robotics teams, machine shops, personal engineering projects, or similar build-intensive environments are strongly encouraged to apply.

What We Do Not Require

  • A college degree

  • A traditional engineering résumé

  • A specific number of years of professional experience

  • Previous employment at a prestigious company

  • Perfect knowledge of every tool or engineering discipline

A strong project portfolio will carry substantially more weight than formal credentials.

Please send a résumé and/or a short summary of your experience along with examples of things you have personally built. Photos, videos, CAD screenshots, project documentation, or portfolio links are encouraged.

We are building a team with different backgrounds and perspectives. Candidates from nontraditional paths are strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation:

$90,000 - $120,000 yearly

Responsibilities:
  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, fixtures, and prototypes in CAD

  • Build and assemble robotic and electromechanical hardware

  • Take loosely defined problems and turn them into working physical systems

  • Test prototypes and identify the actual causes of failures

  • Iterate rapidly based on test results and physical observations

  • Improve designs for reliability, assembly, manufacturability, and serviceability

  • Help establish the tools, processes, and standards of a growing hardware organization

  • Own projects end-to-end, not just individual tasks within them

Qualifications:

What We Are Looking For

  • Demonstrated experience building mechanical or robotic systems

  • Working knowledge of mechanical design and CAD

  • Comfort using tools and assembling physical hardware

  • Strong mechanical intuition and practical problem-solving ability

  • Ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly and independently

  • High personal ownership and follow-through

  • Intellectual honesty: you surface problems clearly rather than hiding them

  • Low ego and willingness to learn from anyone

  • Direct, effective communication

  • Genuine excitement about building difficult physical systems with a small team

Any of the following may help, but none is required:

  • FRC or other serious robotics programs

  • Personal mechanical, automotive, aerospace, or robotics projects; CNC machining, fabrication, welding, or additive manufacturing

  • Design of mechanisms, drivetrains, structures, enclosures, or fixtures

  • Prototype testing, failure analysis, and design iteration

  • Systems where mechanical, electrical, and software decisions interact

  • Fast-moving startup, shop, laboratory, or competition environments
