What is a robotics tester?

Robotics Testers are professionals who evaluate and ensure the functionality, reliability, and safety of robotic systems before they are deployed for use. They design and execute tests to identify bugs, performance issues, and potential hazards in both hardware and software components of robots. Robotics Testers work closely with engineers and developers to troubleshoot problems and verify that robots meet required standards and specifications. Their role is crucial in making sure that robots operate as intended in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Tester, you need a solid background in robotics engineering, programming (such as Python or C++), and experience with automated testing methodologies, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with hardware-software integration tools, test automation frameworks, and simulation environments like ROS (Robot Operating System) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure that robotic systems are thoroughly validated, reliable, and safe for deployment in real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics testers when validating new robotic systems?

Robotics Testers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex hardware-software interactions, replicating intermittent bugs, and ensuring safety compliance during testing. Since robotic systems integrate sensors, actuators, and AI algorithms, testers must develop robust test plans to simulate real-world scenarios and edge cases. Collaboration with engineers and developers is crucial to quickly identify root causes and refine system performance, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Robotics Tester vs Robotics Engineer?

AspectRobotics TesterRobotics Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical engineering, or computer science; certifications in testing or automation are a plusRequires a degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical engineering, or computer science; often holds advanced certifications or specializations
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in labs or testing facilities, focusing on testing robotic systems and softwareDesigning, developing, and implementing robotic systems, often in R&D or manufacturing settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by testing labs, manufacturing companies, and R&D departments to ensure robotic systems meet quality standardsEmployed by tech companies, manufacturing firms, and research institutions to create and improve robotic solutions

Robotics Testers focus on evaluating robotic systems for quality and functionality, while Robotics Engineers are involved in designing and developing these systems. Both roles require technical skills and knowledge of robotics, but their responsibilities differ significantly.

Is it hard to get a job in robotics?

Getting a job as a robotics tester can be competitive and typically requires a background in engineering, programming, or related technical skills. Relevant experience with automation tools, robotics systems, and certifications can improve job prospects, but entry-level positions may be available for those with strong technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Job description

OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing a mobile robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorld’s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and further on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life‑threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond.

We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics real‑time system platform for control, decision making and execution.

OffWorld is seeking a talented and motivated Robotics Test & Integration Engineer to join a fast‑moving team working to create advanced robotic and space systems. As a Robotics Test & Integration Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and executing testing and integration activities. These testing and integration activities span virtual tests (e.g., simulation), subsystem and system testing of robotic platforms at both testing facilities and field‑deployed sites (open pit and subterranean mines). You will work closely with cross‑functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, and project managers, to ensure that testing, integration, and overall development goals are met to the highest standards.

Responsibilities
  • Test Planning and Execution: Create detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts, ensuring adequate coverage of all robotic system components and functionalities. Coordinate and execute testing activities, including functional testing, regression testing, performance testing, and stress testing.
  • Test Automation: Identify opportunities for test automation and develop automated test scripts using appropriate tools and frameworks. Continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing processes through automation.
  • Test Reporting and Documentation: Analyze test results and prepare comprehensive test reports, documenting any defects, issues, or areas of improvement. Maintain detailed documentation of test procedures, configurations, and test environments.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to understand project requirements, resolve issues, and ensure alignment between development and testing activities. Communicate testing progress, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in robotics testing methodologies, tools, and technologies. Identify areas for process improvement, propose innovative solutions, and drive the implementation of best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, robotics, or software / electrical / mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in (mobile and/or manipulator) robotics, or similar.
  • 2+ years of hands‑on testing of (mobile and/or manipulator) robots.
  • Strong knowledge of robotic systems, sensors, perception, and control algorithms across software, hardware, and integrated‑system development.
  • Proficient in programming languages commonly used in robotics, such as C++, Python, or Java.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar robotics middleware.
  • Experience with robotics simulation environments, such as ROS Gazebo, and scenario‑based regression testing.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, git, docker, and Linux command‑line operations and debugging.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities, with the capability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks based on project goals and timelines.
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally approximately 15% of the time.
  • Self‑driven, passionate, and constantly pursuing knowledge and excellence.
Opportunities
  • Opportunity to sink your teeth into cutting edge industrial robotics problems
  • Opportunity to contribute to the mission of transforming how we mine on Earth today and how we will one day mine on the Moon, asteroids & Mars
  • Opportunity to work with a kind, brilliant and supportive team
  • Opportunity to join the OffWorld team if
