Job description

Stretch is Boston Dynamics' robot built to handle multiple applications in warehouse environments. We are hiring engineers to develop autonomous capabilities to drive both Stretch's flagship application: autonomous trailer unloading, as well as new applications like mobile palletizing and order building applications. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing robust, high-performance, and scalable software systems that enable Stretch to move goods through large, active, busy warehouses.

To thrive in this role, you must be comfortable working day to day in a C++ code base, enjoy working in multiple domains while simultaneously picking up new tools and the skills required to succeed in them. You should enjoy integration and the "puzzle" of making software work together seamlessly on a complex hardware platform. You are excited about delivering real-world value, immediate value to improve efficiency and working conditions for our customers!

Responsibilities:

  • Design and maintain high-level task planning and decision-making for mobile manipulation. Build robust sequencing that allows the robot to pick from varied environments and freight configurations, and autonomously recover from common faults.

  • Solve complex problems at the interface of Stretch software and external systems like conveyors, safety systems, warehouse management systems, and downstream sorters.

  • Ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of software through rigorous testing, profiling, and optimization.

  • Troubleshoot and debug complex software issues in a production environment.

  • Collaborate closely with engineers on other teams, including perception and controls, product managers, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into technical designs and implemented features.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's and 1-2+ years of experience as a robotics software engineer or Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.

  • Experience coding in C++

  • Experience working with robotic systems, testing and writing software for a real robot, and in particular, debugging a robotic system.

  • Great behavior developers tend to be generalists; the most qualified candidates will have experience with more than one of: finite state machines, behavior trees, grasping/manipulation, navigation, motion planning, or localization, machine vision / perception, off-board safety systems, and robotic hardware

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.

The base pay range for this position is between $116,479 to $150,158 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting. Boston Dynamics offers a generous Benefits package including medical, dental vision, 401(k), paid time off and a annual bonus structure. Additional details regarding these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer for employment.
