What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, robotics, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in algorithm development. Proficiency with programming languages like C++, Python, and ROS (Robot Operating System), as well as familiarity with simulation tools and version control systems, is essential. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and adapting to evolving technologies. These skills and qualities are vital for designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable robotic systems that perform effectively in real-world environments.

What Does a Robotics Software Engineer Do?

The job duties of a robotics software engineer are working to develop software for robot control and automation. In this job, your responsibilities include working on an embedded system that controls automated equipment. You may build new software or test, improve, or debug current software. Most robotics software engineers work for the manufacturing industry and focus on robots that companies use in product production. You may work in other fields that use robotics as well. This job may include responsibilities such as developing a user interface that non-technical employees can use to set up the equipment.

What is the difference between Robotics Software Engineer vs Mechatronics Engineer?

AspectRobotics Software EngineerMechatronics Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related field; programming skillsBachelor's in Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; multidisciplinary knowledge
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, robotics labs, research facilitiesDesign, integrate mechanical and electronic systems, often in manufacturing or automation
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, robotics firms, research institutionsManufacturing, automation, aerospace, automotive industries

While both roles involve robotics, a Robotics Software Engineer primarily focuses on developing software for robotic systems, whereas a Mechatronics Engineer designs and integrates mechanical, electronic, and software components. The roles often overlap but differ in their core focus areas and skill sets.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Software Engineers when integrating software with hardware systems?

Robotics Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and physical hardware components. These can include dealing with sensor noise, managing real-time constraints, debugging hardware-software mismatches, and ensuring reliable performance in unpredictable environments. Close collaboration with electrical and mechanical engineers is essential to quickly resolve integration issues and to test software on physical robots. Adapting to rapid hardware changes and troubleshooting in live environments require strong problem-solving skills and effective cross-disciplinary teamwork.

What does a Robotics Software Engineer do?

A Robotics Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls and powers robots. This includes writing code for robot perception, control algorithms, and integration with hardware components. They work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless interaction between the robot's physical and digital systems. Their work often involves programming in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS (Robot Operating System) and testing robots in real-world or simulated environments.

Job description

Join the team that's shaping the future of autonomous robotics and material handling. As an R&D Software Engineer at Toyota Automated Logistics, you'll develop the brains behind intelligent robotic systems, from low-level hardware control to high-level autonomy and perception.
You'll work on real robots. You'll ship real code. You'll help launch entirely new automation products into warehouses and factories across the world.
We don't just build software; we build the future of logistics.
About Us
Toyota Automated Logistics R&D is the New Product Development (NPD) division of the company. Our mission is to develop original products that expand Toyota Automated Logistics' automation capabilities - enabling our commissioning and systems teams to deliver integrated solutions that give our customers a competitive edge.
Our ~70-person team is distributed between our Boise, Dallas, and Indianapolis offices, and includes experts in mechanical, electrical, software, and AI disciplines, all with a strong foundation in robotics technology. Beyond our Toyota Automated Logistics offices, we collaborate heavily with our other Toyota partners to innovate and share our technology globally.
Software engineers on our team are true full-stack robotics developers, with opportunities to work across the entire software stack - from high-level autonomy, AI, and perception to low-level motor control, hardware interfaces, and everything in-between. We take products from concept to production-ready designs, and we execute our software on real robot hardware in live customer environments.
Above all else, we know that our strength lies in our people. Through strong mentorship, thoughtful planning, and a supportive team culture, we create space for engineers to grow while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Your Mission
The primary mission of the R&D Senior Software Engineer is to act as a technical expert and leader who drives the team towards success. You will develop the architectures and designs that enable our software systems to reliably scale to customer deployments. You will put a major focus on refining the processes and SOPs that drive our team to be effective. You will work to mentor and inspire your peers to become stronger engineers. At Toyota Automated Logistics, we value our team culture extremely highly. You will operate as a force multiplier to make the team the strongest they can be!
As the R&D Senior Software Engineer, you are an expert in Linux development using both C++ and Python. You have experience designing production ready software and understand the patterns and architectures used to create reliable and maintainable codebases. You have experience with common robotics software tools and concepts such as ROS, motor control, localization, navigation, and sensor hardware technology such as LiDAR, Cameras, Motors, Encoders, etc.
Most importantly, you have experience leading teams, driving processes, inspiring software engineers, and creating strong team cultures with open communication. In this role, you won't just build software. You'll help shape how our systems behave in the real world, and you will build and support a team that values both innovation and thoughtful execution.
Job Functions
  • Contribute directly to ROS-based C++ and Python codebases, running on Linux systems.
  • Create software designs, host design and code reviews, and engage with SDLC processes.
  • Responsible for owning key development and acting as a key stakeholder in review approvals.

  • Create test plans and engage in hands-on testing and verification on live Robots & Hardware.
  • Uphold our safety standards when interacting with live equipment.
  • Participate in field trials and customer on-site Beta deployments as we release new products.
  • Work with other Toyota Automated Logistics and TICO business units throughout the release process of R&D products (Manufacturing, Commissioning, Development, etc).
