What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, robotics, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in algorithm development. Proficiency with programming languages like C++, Python, and ROS (Robot Operating System), as well as familiarity with simulation tools and version control systems, is essential. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and adapting to evolving technologies. These skills and qualities are vital for designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable robotic systems that perform effectively in real-world environments.

What Does a Robotics Software Engineer Do?

The job duties of a robotics software engineer are working to develop software for robot control and automation. In this job, your responsibilities include working on an embedded system that controls automated equipment. You may build new software or test, improve, or debug current software. Most robotics software engineers work for the manufacturing industry and focus on robots that companies use in product production. You may work in other fields that use robotics as well. This job may include responsibilities such as developing a user interface that non-technical employees can use to set up the equipment.

What is the difference between Robotics Software Engineer vs Mechatronics Engineer?

AspectRobotics Software EngineerMechatronics Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related field; programming skillsBachelor's in Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering; multidisciplinary knowledge
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, robotics labs, research facilitiesDesign, integrate mechanical and electronic systems, often in manufacturing or automation
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, robotics firms, research institutionsManufacturing, automation, aerospace, automotive industries

While both roles involve robotics, a Robotics Software Engineer primarily focuses on developing software for robotic systems, whereas a Mechatronics Engineer designs and integrates mechanical, electronic, and software components. The roles often overlap but differ in their core focus areas and skill sets.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Software Engineers when integrating software with hardware systems?

Robotics Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and physical hardware components. These can include dealing with sensor noise, managing real-time constraints, debugging hardware-software mismatches, and ensuring reliable performance in unpredictable environments. Close collaboration with electrical and mechanical engineers is essential to quickly resolve integration issues and to test software on physical robots. Adapting to rapid hardware changes and troubleshooting in live environments require strong problem-solving skills and effective cross-disciplinary teamwork.

What does a Robotics Software Engineer do?

A Robotics Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls and powers robots. This includes writing code for robot perception, control algorithms, and integration with hardware components. They work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless interaction between the robot's physical and digital systems. Their work often involves programming in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS (Robot Operating System) and testing robots in real-world or simulated environments.

Technical Program Manager - Government Robotics Programs
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma | On-site
Opportunity Summary
Join a fast-growing robotics company developing advanced automation platforms that support aerospace and defense manufacturing, aircraft sustainment, and depot operations. As customer demand continues to expand, we're seeking a Technical Program Manager to lead the successful execution of government robotics programs while helping scale one of the company's most strategically important operations. This role combines technical program leadership, customer engagement, and operational management. You'll oversee government-funded programs from contract award through deployment, serve as the primary interface for government customers, and lead a growing team supporting fielded robotic systems. Working directly with executive leadership and multidisciplinary engineering teams, you'll play a key role in delivering innovative automation solutions while helping shape the future growth of the organization. This is an ideal opportunity for a technical leader who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering, operations, and customer success in a collaborative startup environment.
About Us
We are a venture-backed robotics company developing standardized automation platforms that improve how aerospace and defense organizations manufacture, maintain, and sustain critical assets. Our products combine robotics, controls, software, sensing technologies, and precision engineering to automate complex manufacturing and maintenance operations. Unlike traditional automation integrators, we're focused on building scalable robotic products that can be deployed across multiple customers and applications. Our team operates with speed, accountability, and technical excellence, giving every employee meaningful ownership over both product development and customer success.
Job Duties
  • Lead execution of government robotics and automation programs from contract award through successful customer delivery.
  • Own overall program performance, including schedule, scope, budget, risk management, and customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for government customers, program offices, and contracting organizations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a growing team of Applications Engineers supporting customer deployments and field operations.
  • Coordinate engineering resources across mechanical, electrical, controls, software, manufacturing, and applications engineering teams.
  • Translate customer requirements into actionable program plans and engineering priorities.
  • Support proposal development, Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates, contract transitions, and strategic planning activities.
  • Oversee contract deliverables, technical documentation, and compliance with government program requirements.
  • Identify program risks early and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Build strong relationships with government stakeholders, depot organizations, and aerospace customers.
  • Establish scalable program management processes that support continued organizational growth.
  • Participate in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and developing technical team members.
  • Partner with executive leadership on future customer opportunities and long-term business growth.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Program Management, Operations, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience managing complex technical programs within aerospace, defense, robotics, manufacturing, or similar industries.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering or technical teams.
  • Experience managing government or Department of Defense programs.
  • Strong understanding of program planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource management, and risk mitigation.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to work effectively across customers, executives, and engineering organizations.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent programs.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support customer programs.

Preferred Experience
  • Military service or experience supporting Department of Defense organizations.
  • Experience with aerospace manufacturing, aircraft sustainment, depot maintenance, or advanced manufacturing operations.
  • Familiarity with FAR, DFARS, CDRLs, contract modifications, and government contracting processes.
