What does a robotics software developer do?

A Robotics Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls robotic systems. They write code that enables robots to sense their environment, make decisions, and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These developers often work with embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve robot performance. Their work is essential for applications ranging from manufacturing automation to healthcare and service robots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS, along with a background in computer science, engineering, or robotics. Familiarity with robotics simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo), version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with sensor integration and real-time operating systems are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in multidisciplinary environments. These abilities ensure reliable development, integration, and deployment of robotic systems that meet both technical and user requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics software developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Software Developers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and diverse hardware components like sensors, actuators, and controllers. Differences in hardware specifications, real-time constraints, and debugging low-level hardware interactions can add complexity to development. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers is essential to address issues quickly and optimize system performance. Staying up to date with new frameworks and tools, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), also helps streamline integration and testing.

What is the difference between Robotics Software Developer vs Mechatronics Engineer?

Job description

Mujin is the future of industrial robotic systems in production and distribution environments. Our technology gives robots perception and awareness, enabling them to take on more advanced tasks. We aim to revolutionize the use of robotics within industry to free human resources from labor-intensive tasks to focus on more intellectual challenges.

As the Senior Software Developer in Test at Mujin, you will play a pivotal role in providing Test Engineering thought leadership and QA infrastructure and tooling expertise to focused R&D teams developing innovative software solutions. SDET’s enable the product development organization to produce Mujin systems and software that are fit-for-purpose. The role collaborates with other colleagues and stakeholders to successfully launch Mujin products, while also providing remote and onsite support.

Your mission is advancing the state-of-the-art for quality engineering at Mujin. You will develop cutting-edge quality systems and implement test automation frameworks. Our applications are performance-critical and involve autonomous interactions with the surrounding world in an uncontrolled environment. You will build, test, and deploy your work in simulation and in the real world on the world’s most advanced hardware. You will contribute to the development of ambitious high-impact projects as part of a dedicated team of world-class “Mujineers”.

Ideal candidates will possess a combination of product development expertise, problem-solving, curiosity, innovation, leadership, and communication. If you’re passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology, this role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of intelligent robotics automation.

Position Description:

  • Lead the design and implementation of robust systems, processes, and tools to elevate Mujin systems and software quality, reliability, and user experience.
  • Contribute test coverage, tooling, and simulators across a multi-repo software ecosystem spanning robot control, material handling equipment integration, and fleet/mobile robot services.
  • Shift-Left quality engineering and test automation principles to incorporate first-time-right goals into the design phase of the software development process.
  • Set up and maintain test automation frameworks and coach developers on how to leverage them for finding/fixing bugs faster while increasing coverage.
  • Design and implement simulators for industrial robots, material handling equipment, sensors, and warehouse management systems.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure seamless system interoperability.
  • Review code and provide developers with constructive feedback to drive continuous improvements in quality and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to accelerate/expand test planning to include unit, functional, integration, end-to-end with dependencies, exception (negative) cases, and performance testing, including validating integration contracts and communication boundaries between control services and hardware bridge integrations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in deployed systems.
  • Instill discipline and quality-first culture for timely delivery and exceptional user experience.
