What does a robotics software developer do?

A Robotics Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls robotic systems. They write code that enables robots to sense their environment, make decisions, and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These developers often work with embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve robot performance. Their work is essential for applications ranging from manufacturing automation to healthcare and service robots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS, along with a background in computer science, engineering, or robotics. Familiarity with robotics simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo), version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with sensor integration and real-time operating systems are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in multidisciplinary environments. These abilities ensure reliable development, integration, and deployment of robotic systems that meet both technical and user requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by robotics software developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Software Developers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and diverse hardware components like sensors, actuators, and controllers. Differences in hardware specifications, real-time constraints, and debugging low-level hardware interactions can add complexity to development. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers is essential to address issues quickly and optimize system performance. Staying up to date with new frameworks and tools, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), also helps streamline integration and testing.

What is the difference between Robotics Software Developer vs Mechatronics Engineer?

Job description

Field Support Engineer – Robotic Targets

Overview

MVP Robotics is a cutting-edge engineering firm dedicated to safety and human performance through applied robotics in grueling environments.   MVP's robotic tackling dummies have eliminated concussions on the football field from the NFL to youth football programs. MVP's HEKTR robotic targets enable a new level of readiness and survivability for our nation's warfighters.  MVP continues to develop next-generation training and operational tools to overcome the challenges of tomorrow.

Position Summary

The Field Support Engineer (FSE) provides on-site technical support, maintenance, and training for a USAF program utilizing robotic shooting targets for live-fire training. The FSE serves as the primary technical liaison between MVP's engineering team, program management, and base personnel, ensuring the operational readiness of robotic target systems throughout deployment, upgrades, troubleshooting, and sustainment. The FSE will support R&D initiatives through design, experimentation and field testing of novel technologies. This role requires strong electromechanical acumen, field service experience, and the ability to operate independently in austere military training environments.

What you'll do

System Deployment & Maintenance

  • Deploy, install, configure, and maintain robotic target systems in support of USAF training exercises.
  • Execute preventive and corrective maintenance, system inspections, diagnostics, firmware updates, and approved field modifications.
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, and software faults.
  • Maintain configuration control of assigned systems and support equipment to ensure hardware and software baseline compliance.
  • Monitor equipment condition and communicate sustainment risks that may impact training operations.

Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and resolve failures across mechanical, electrical, software, communications, and power systems.
  • Utilize test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and diagnostic software to identify and resolve complex system faults.
  • Conduct system checks, calibration, software installations, configuration changes, and field modifications per approved procedures.
  • Support field testing and provide structured feedback to engineering teams to improve product reliability and performance.

Training & Customer Engagement

  • Interface directly with USAF personnel, range control staff, and program stakeholders to ensure operational readiness and user satisfaction.
  • Deliver on-site training to operators and maintenance personnel on system operation, maintenance procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Support training exercises as required to ensure mission success.
  • Travel to support maintenance, training, demonstrations and technology delivery as required.
  • Represent MVP Robotics professionally to customers, partners, and the broader military community.

Research and Development

  • Develop new technologies to enable novel capabilities in training and operational theaters.
  • Collaborate with customers and MVP Engineers to take concepts from ideation through fielded prototypes.
  • Execute field testing and validation of novel designs.
  • Develop mechanical, electrical, and software solutions to meet customer requirements.

Logistics & Documentation

  • Support logistics activities including inventory control, shipping/receiving, and spare parts management.
  • Prepare accurate field service reports, maintenance logs, incident documentation, and readiness data.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety procedures, operational guidelines, and customer security protocols.

We Require:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent military training/experience.
