Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

Robotics Software Developers focus on programming and developing software for robotic systems, while Mechatronics Engineers work on designing and integrating mechanical, electronic, and software components. Both roles often collaborate but differ mainly in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Software Developers in integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Software Developers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between software algorithms and diverse hardware components like sensors, actuators, and controllers. Differences in hardware specifications, real-time constraints, and debugging low-level hardware interactions can add complexity to development. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers is essential to address issues quickly and optimize system performance. Staying up to date with new frameworks and tools, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), also helps streamline integration and testing.

What does a Robotics Software Developer do?

A Robotics Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains the software that controls robotic systems. They write code that enables robots to sense their environment, make decisions, and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. These developers often work with embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve robot performance. Their work is essential for applications ranging from manufacturing automation to healthcare and service robots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or ROS, along with a background in computer science, engineering, or robotics. Familiarity with robotics simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo), version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with sensor integration and real-time operating systems are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in multidisciplinary environments. These abilities ensure reliable development, integration, and deployment of robotic systems that meet both technical and user requirements.

Job Description

As a Senior Robotic Software Developer, you will emphasize platform-level ownership, including system architecture, deployment workflows, and ensuring reproducibility and reliability across development and on-robot environments. In this role, you will work at the intersection of research and real-world deployment, helping bring advanced robotics capabilities into industry applications. You will be responsible for the integration of mobile manipulators, combining autonomous mobile robots with robotic manipulators to enable complex industrial tasks. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive in system-level, enjoy working across the full robotics stack, and want to see their work deployed and operating continuously on physical systems. You will report to Senior Manager, Robot Technology Integration. You will work Hybrid in Waterloo, ON.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead architecture design for platform-level systems, defining interfaces, abstractions, and long-term evolution strategy; Drive integration strategies across heterogeneous subsystems and environments; Design for fault tolerance, graceful degradation, and recovery in real-world systems.
  • Design and maintain deployment workflows and CI/CD pipelines for robotics applications; Ensure reproducibility across development, simulation, and physical system environments; Manage software lifecycle, versioning, and release processes for deployed systems.
  • Improve overall system reliability, stability, and operational readiness; Investigate and resolve system-level issues spanning software, hardware, and networking; Define and implement observability strategies; Develop tools to analyze system performance and identify bottlenecks;
  • Work closely with our research team to apply modern robotics research, such as motion planning, perception, and manipulation, to real-world robotic systems; Evaluate new technologies and approaches through prototyping, benchmarking, and validation; Identify risks and trade-offs when integrating new capabilities into existing platforms.
  • Experience integrating complex robotic systems across multiple subsystems; Strong understanding of software-hardware interfaces and real-world system constraints; Familiarity with robot kinematics, motion planning, or control systems; Understanding of distributed systems, networking, and inter-process communication.
  • Experience building and maintaining deployment workflows and pipelines; Familiarity with containerization and environment management; Experience with CI/CD tools and reproducible build systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to debug issues across a complex system; Experience diagnosing issues across software, hardware, and networking boundaries; Familiarity with profiling, tracing, and performance analysis tools; Experience building tools or systems for automated diagnostics and monitoring.
