What is robotics simulation?

Robotics simulation is the use of computer software to model and test the behavior of robots in a virtual environment. This allows engineers and researchers to design, program, and optimize robots without needing physical prototypes, saving time and resources. Simulations can replicate real-world conditions, enabling the analysis of robot movement, sensor data, and task performance before implementation. Robotics simulation is commonly used in developing autonomous systems, industrial automation, and research applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, computer science, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like Gazebo, ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB/Simulink, and programming languages such as Python or C++ is essential. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help in designing and refining complex simulation models. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate simulations that accelerate development, testing, and deployment of robotic systems.

What is the difference between Robotics Simulation vs Robotics Software Engineer?

Robotics Simulation focuses on creating virtual environments to test and validate robotic systems, while Robotics Software Engineers develop the actual software that controls robots. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of robotics development, with simulation emphasizing testing and validation, and software engineering focusing on implementation and coding.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in robotics simulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in robotics simulation often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling real-world physics, ensuring simulation fidelity, and integrating with hardware or software systems. Addressing these requires a strong understanding of both robotics and simulation tools, as well as effective collaboration with engineers, software developers, and testers. Staying updated with advancements in simulation platforms and maintaining clear documentation are key strategies to overcome these challenges and ensure the simulations provide meaningful insights for development and testing.

Job description

Job Description
Senior Autonomous Mobile Robot Deployment Engineer
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard - from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
As a Senior AMR Deployment Engineer, you will lead the launch and deployment of Autonomous Mobile Robot solutions within a manufacturing environment, serving as a key link between GM plants, strategic suppliers, and executive leadership. This role is focused on execution - driving supplier performance, maintaining program timing, resolving deployment issues, and helping ensure automation systems are ready to support start of production.
This is a highly visible, plant-based role for someone who is comfortable owning complex implementation work, influencing across functions, and turning automation strategy into operational results. Success in this position comes from strong technical judgment, disciplined program execution, and the ability to keep teams aligned around milestones, risk, cost, and readiness.
What You'll Do
  • Lead AMR and related material automation deployments from planning through launch and stabilization, including scope definition, supplier coordination, equipment build, run-off, installation, buyoff, readiness reviews, and post-launch support
  • Serve as the primary interface with strategic suppliers, ensuring adherence to GM standards, deliverables, and key launch milestones
  • Own program timing, risks, and open issues, providing clear updates to plant and executive leadership
  • Partner across manufacturing, industrial engineering, controls, logistics, purchasing, and plant operations to deliver safe, efficient, and scalable material flow automation
  • Troubleshoot deployment and integration issues, drive corrective actions, and support continuous improvement across current and future phases
  • Help shape future automation plans by identifying opportunities, evaluating feasibility, and supporting phased deployment roadmaps
  • Support required documentation and provide technical direction to less experienced engineers and project team members

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing, industrial automation, material flow, robotics deployment, or a related engineering role
  • Experience leading implementation or launch of automation systems in a manufacturing or plant environment
  • Experience working directly with suppliers, integrators, or OEM partners to deliver technical projects on schedule
  • Working knowledge of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and/or other automated material handling technologies such as AFTs, ASRS, or kitting/sequencing systems
  • Strong project execution skills, including milestone management, issue resolution, and executive-level status reporting
  • Ability to work onsite in a plant environment five days per week
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive accountability

What will give you a competitive edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience deploying AMRs at scale, including fleet management, routing, charging strategy, and integration into plant operations
  • Background in General Assembly, material execution, or lean material launch strategy
  • Familiarity with supplier management in a launch-intensive environment, especially with automation or robotics integrators
  • Experience with controls, robotics, simulation, or manufacturing systems related to automated material movement
  • Knowledge of labor studies, material flow analysis, or process optimization in support of automation decisions
  • PMP or other project/program management training or certification
  • Proven ability to lead through ambiguity, balance technical and business priorities, and deliver results in high-visibility manufacturing programs
