What is the difference between Robotics Robotics vs Automation Technician?

AspectRobotics RoboticsAutomation Technician
Required CredentialsAssociate's/Bachelor's in Robotics, Mechatronics, or related fieldsAssociate's/Bachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Technology
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, research labs, automation facilitiesFactories, production lines, maintenance workshops
Industry UsageDesign, programming, and maintenance of robotic systemsInstallation, troubleshooting, and repair of automated equipment
Common Search/ComparisonRobotics Robotics vs Automation Technician

Robotics Robotics professionals focus on designing, programming, and maintaining robotic systems, often requiring specialized degrees in robotics or related fields. Automation Technicians primarily install, troubleshoot, and repair automated machinery, typically with technical diplomas or certifications. While both roles work in manufacturing environments and involve automation, Robotics Robotics emphasizes system development, whereas Automation Technicians focus on operational maintenance and repair.

Is robotics a high paying career?

Robotics is generally considered a high-paying career, especially for roles such as robotics engineers and automation specialists, with salaries often exceeding the national average for engineering fields. Advanced skills in programming, control systems, and experience with tools like CAD and ROS can lead to higher compensation, particularly in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, and research. However, salaries vary based on experience, education, location, and industry demand.

What careers are in robotics?

Careers in robotics include roles such as robotics engineer, automation technician, control systems engineer, and research scientist. These positions often require knowledge of programming, mechanical design, and electronics, and may involve working with tools like CAD software and robotic simulation platforms.

Job description

Promise Robotics is pioneering Physical AI for homebuilding - a rapidly growing, venture-backed company bringing together AI, robotics, and manufacturing to help the homebuilding industry meet the growing demand for housing. Our robotic systems, built andย operatedย inside ย AI-powered factories, give the industry the production capacity, consistency, and speed to build more high-quality homes than traditional methods allow. Our team spans AI researchers and roboticists to factory operators, technicians, and production teams - allย buildingย the future ofย homebuildingย together.ย

We'reย buildingย physical AI for housingย - and unlike most of the field, our robots are already in production, fabricating real structures and generating real operational data every day across multiple factories.ย

We'reย looking for a Robotics Software Developer to join our team and contribute to developingย cutting-edgeย solutions for our core robotic manufacturing technologies.ย This is an early-career role for someone with strong fundamentals and hands-on robotics project experience who wants to develop it in production.

Why join us?
  • Purpose-Driven Work:Contribute to projects with significant social, economic, and environmental impact.ย

  • Growth Opportunities:Be part of a growth-stage startup with substantial upside and leadership potential.ย

  • Cutting-Edgeย Technology:Work onย state-of-the-artย robotics solutions at the intersection of construction and automation.ย

  • Collaborative Culture:Join a diverse, high-performing team committed to continuous learning and innovation.ย

What you'll do:
  • Build andย maintainย simulation scenesย - set up and extend simulation environments and test scenarios that mirror our production cells.ย

  • Implement motion routinesย - develop and tune motion-planning and collision-checking behaviors in ROS 2 / MoveIt2 under the guidance of senior engineers.ย

  • Developย perceptionย componentsย - implement object detection, pose estimation, and point-cloud processing tasks for material handling and inspection.ย

  • Write clean, tested codeย - produce well-documented C++ and Python, backed by unit and integration tests.ย ย

  • Debug integration issuesย - help troubleshoot software-hardware issues alongside the robotics and hardware teams.ย ย

  • Participate in the team's practices - contribute to code reviews, agile ceremonies, and CI pipelines.

ย
What you'll need to succeed:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields (Masters/Ph.D. preferred).ย
  • Solid programming ability in C++ and/or Python.ย ย

  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and basic control concepts.ย

  • Ability to solve complex problems involving multi-disciplinary engineering concepts.ย

  • Hands-on experience with ROS or ROS 2ย - through projects, internships, co-ops, or coursework.ย ย

  • Familiarity with at least oneย robotics simulatorย (Gazebo, Isaac Sim,ย MuJoCo,ย PyBullet, or similar).ย ย

  • Exposure to computer vision or perception concepts.ย ย

  • Eagerness to learn, take feedback, and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startup.ย ย

  • Willingness to work onsite at our R&D labs and production facilitiesย inย Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.ย

Preferred Skills:ย

  • An internship, co-op, competition team (e.g., robotics/autonomy), or a portfolio of robotics projects.ย

  • Experience withย MoveIt2ย or another motion-planning framework.ย ย

  • Familiarity withย Isaac Simย / Omniverseย orย similarย simulation tools.ย ย

  • Coursework, research, or side projects involvingย VLA models, LLMs, or machine learningย for robotics.ย ย

  • Any exposure to industrial robots (KUKA, ABB, Fanuc) or sensor systems (cameras, depth sensors, force sensors, LiDAR).ย ย

  • DevOps basics - Docker, Git, CI/CD.ย ย

Benefits:
Competitive salary:ย we believe in data-driven, equitable compensation decisions. We recently completed a compensation review and implemented salary bands that enable us to pay mid to above-average Canadian salaries across various industries.
Stock options:ย everyone has a stake in our company.
Holistic benefits:ย we have a comprehensive benefits package that includes paramedical, dental, vision, and drug coverage for you and your dependents, as well as a health care spending account. These benefits start right from Day 1.
Flexible personal days and vacation policies:ย we care deeply about the well-being of our team.
Open, collaborative, and supportive culture:ย you will be part of an incredibly high-performing and collaborative team changing the future of an industry!
Relocation assistance package (if required)
