Who We Are

East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) began in 1958 as a children's reading group and has since grown into a multi-site after-school program for traditional public school students and a network of public charter schools focused on significantly increasing the college graduation rate in East Harlem. We are on track to serve at least 25% of East Harlem students by 2025, with enrollment for this year at approximately 2200 students in our schools and after-school programs. In 2020, 99% of our seniors were accepted to college, and our current scholars in college are on track to graduate at eight times the national average of their peers.

At EHTP we also aim to serve as an agent of change and thoughtfully contribute to the national fight for racial equity. Through our organization-wide commitment to anti-racism work, we prepare our scholars to effect change, challenge the status quo, and thrive in the world around them. As staff members, we face our own racial identities and conscious and unconscious biases. With this in mind, all of our professional development, curriculum, organizational materials, and processes are designed with the goal of racial justice. Read our racial equity statement here.

We ground all of our work in racial equity, in our core values, and in our four guiding pursuits: the Revolutionary Pursuit of Love, the Radical Pursuit of Knowledge, the Responsive Pursuit of Healing, and the Relentless Pursuit of Results. These pursuits inform and are reflected in our current four key strategic priorities: to increase high-impact, high-quality academic curriculum, programming content, staff capacity, and coaching; to embrace and advance our use of technology; to deepen our embodiment of ethical and equitable radical humanity; and to efficiently operationalize teaching, learning, community, and care.

The Work and Why it Matters

The Robotics Instructor plays an integral role in the school-year program's success by fostering an inspiring, collaborative community through project-based engineering, social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies, and effective classroom management. The Instructor must be enthusiastic about working across various age ranges, from Grades 9 to 12, with a specific focus on leading our championship-winning Robotics team through rigorous technical challenges. They will ensure that all scholars engage in a meaningful and impactful way throughout the school year, designing hands-on weekly lessons, guiding youth workers to support the lab, and facilitating the team's preparation for local and regional competitions.

What Qualifies You

Please note that many do not meet 100% of the desired qualifications. If much of this describes you, we encourage you to still apply.

You have at least 2 years of teaching or career experience in Middle School or High School Robotics

You have an Associates Degree or have earned at least 60 college credits in Engineering or other science related field

You have at least 2 years of experience working with Middle or High School students in an after school or summer camp setting

You have experience working with diverse populations (academic, cultural, and ethnic)

You are committed to continuous improvement and learning through professional development

You are flexible and adaptable to program and student needs, willing to work with any age range from 9-12

You have strong communication skills (both written and verbal)

You have Google and/or Microsoft suite competency (Word, Power Point, Email, etc)

You have at least 2 years experience in creating and implementing lesson plans around an end-of-term project or performance (project-based learning)

What Success Looks Like

Core Values, Leadership & Professionalism

Model EHTP Excellence: Serve as a positive role model for both scholars and youth workers by living out our core values every day: Service, Courage, Humility, Originality, Leadership, Achievement, and Reflection.

Reliability & Readiness: Set the tone for your Robotics sessions by arriving on time, in uniform, and with a positive attitude, ready to launch the day's programming and coding activities.

Professional Collaboration: Actively participate in school-year training sessions, designated staff meetings, and special community events to continuously improve program quality.

Coding Facilitation, Curriculum Design & Support

Designing & Implementing Lessons: Create, submit, and teach engaging robotics lesson plans. Ensure sessions run smoothly, debugging issues patiently, and guide scholars step-by-step toward an exciting final digital project or software showcase at the end of the school year.

Coding Instructor Partner Guidance: Partner with the Coding Instructor to plan, create, and deliver lessons intended to finalize the season's Robot and its capabilities as set forth by FIRST Robotics. Clearly share your session's goals so they know how to best plug in, assist with troubleshooting code, and keep scholars focused during independent build time.

Inclusive Tech Environment: Build a coding lab and classroom community where everyone feels safe, welcome, and respected. Maintain routines that demystify technology, encourage creative problem-solving, and keep the space an inclusive, focused learning environment.

Responsive Scholar Support: Keep an eye on scholar engagement during computer activities. Provide 1:1 guidance to help scholars who need extra encouragement, logical troubleshooting, or technical support with their code.

Group Safety, Tech Equipment & Cleanliness

Active Supervision: Keep a watchful, caring eye on your scholars at all times. Work collaboratively with the team to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for during your sessions, including meal times and digital-free transitions.

Hardware & Software Stewardship: Collaborate with program leadership and operations to secure and maintain necessary devices. Take pride in your technology space by ensuring all laptops, chargers, and tech tools are carefully handled, properly stored, and organized.

Field Trip and Overnight Trip Safety: Support the team in keeping scholars safe and together during school-year trips and overnight competition trips, including to Houston, TX for the FIRST Championship. Help with regular headcounts, keep scholars engaged in the experience, and model great behavior in public spaces.

Administration & Team Support

Data & Records: Help maintain accurate program documentation. Ensure attendance for your specific sessions is tracked, and quickly write up and report any injuries or behavioral incidents.

Flexible Teamwork: Stay adaptable and supportive of the community by jumping in to help with other duties as needed to ensure a successful school year.

Progress Monitoring & Skill Reporting: Routinely evaluate scholar progress through project milestones, debugging challenges, and completed code. Provide clear, supportive summaries and reports on the technical skills, computational thinking, and core competencies scholars have developed throughout the school year.
